Backup with iTunes then sync I'm not sure about SMS though

If you're setting up a new phone in hopes to improve performance, first try restoring your iPhone from backup then going to settings-general-reset-reset all settings. It resets all databases but keeps your call logs, SMS, email, etc. I do it after every upgrade and no complaints here.
