My iPhone 4s was mistakenly updated to iOS 5.0.1 and with it my dreams of jailbreaking were shattered, that is until I surreptitiously swapped it with my girlfriends 4s which was still running good old iOS 5 :D

Therefore my question is, if I restore this phone (running iOS 5) with my iPhones backup (that was running iOS 5.0.1) will it automatically update the firmware to that of the backup, or is the FW irrelevant here as it is only apps, contacts, photos etc that are restored?

Any advice on this conundrum of mine will be greatly appreciated!

Cheers peeps

Re:

Thank you for your prompt response!

This is what i suspected however i have read around a few other places and keep finding conflicting answers!

As the backup is actually based on the latest software and the phone is running the old will it not force me to update to the firmware that my backup was captured from?

I only ask because quite a few posts i found said that "as long as the phone is running the same or greater version of iOS, then it will work with no problem".

Thanks again!

Don't confuse restoring the phone (which includes firmware) and restoring from a backup.

If you plug in the gf's phone to your computer/itunes it will ask about doing a firmware update, tell it not to. Assuming it has been syncing against her computer, it should then give a popup about it being synced to a different computer and ask if you want to sync to the new computer. I don't have a spare phone to try it with, but you *should* be able at that point to cancel out of that then right-click/option-click on the phone under DEVICES on the left side of the itunes window and select "Restore from backup" and then choose the backup. The resulting window even says it won't restore the firmware.
