Lately my jailbroken and unlocked first gen has been dropping calls and generally having really poor reception. A lot of the times it just reads no service until I turn the antenna on and off. It is FW 1.1.4 and all the unlocking was done using iJailBreak on mac. I wanted to take it in for warranty repair/replacement but I don't know the proper restoring procedure. I restored with iTunes to 2.0.2. Is this sufficient or will Apple still be able to tell it was unlocked? Also do I need to take it in with a SIM card, because I don't have an AT&T one. The phone is in good cosmetic condition and has not been dropped or anything. Any tips appreciated.

If you don't have an activated ATT account w/ the iPhone then the warranty never existed...
So I think you're out of luck. Try to get one of your buddies' iPhone sim card and try using that? maybe that'll work. (no guarantees)
if someone stuck their existing ATT card into the phone, it would work without activation. i don't see how this is a breach of warranty?

Doesn't matter. when the iPhone gets activated with an iPhone sim, it sends its serial number to apple.com as a registered iphone.

Try typing in your iPhone's Serial Number into that website. If its like my phone, the thing would say "unactivated and not eligible for warranty"

I suggest backing up your phone, go to DFU mode, and then reload the original 1.1.4 firmware before you take it to the apple store. the moment they see that it's been jailbroken, they'll happily give the phone back to you, send you away, and then mark that iphone in their system for being jailbroken and lose the warranty.

oh well. yeah. put it in DFU mode and restore it back with an official firmware. That will erase everything.

do you know for sure that it erases all traces that the phone has been pwned? I want to jailbreak 2 of my phones a 2g and a 3g, I'm an att user with a legit contract and want to make sure that if something happens i'll be able to get it replaced under warranty. I know that you can put in dfu mode and restore to original firmware, but I was under the impression that if you did that you wouldn't have to pwn it again to get custom firmware on there because pwning was something semi-permanent?

not unless you use ziphone and the bootloader gets changed. iLiberty and pwnagetool uses FB bootloader which, when restored using official, also restores and locks the bootloader.
Just in case, you might want to bootneuter your phone first. (I'm sure theres a guide somewhere, but I don't remember where it is)
