Hey guys, I still haven’t had the opportunity to use my new iPad Pro cuz it’s been restoring for hours now lol

I am restoring like 510 GB of data thru Thunderbolt 4 cable on a Thunderbolt 4 port on a Mac. I’m pretty sure transfer speeds are faster than this … :s

I wonder if file transfers thru iTunes File Sharing will use Thundabolt 4 speeds

I seriously wanna use my iPad already… it’s almost midnight

That doesn’t sound fun and disappointing
FUUUUU after 4 hours it crashed??? Or it didn’t complete restoring? It sent me back to the main page instead of the Apple loading, the Finder sidebar where it shows iPad changed to the name I had… but no data was loaded?!

god damn it, guess I’m using iCloud …

One has to suspect apple is trying to cripple cable restoring so people will have no choice but to use iCloud as the only first party backup option.
I use two accounts so I can’t do iTunes restore, but maybe they think slower restore is better for data integrity? Or they are verifying it while restoring?

You can verify the speed by looking at activity monitor and check the disk activity. Other way to check is using iostat. List all of your disks using "diskutil list" and then do "iostat -w <disk> <disk>" You can assume disk0/1 is your mac's hard drive. With how Catalina / Big Sur set up the disks, I would go for disk1 cause disk0 is now a read only disk for the OS.

Doing this will show you how fast the disk is being read which you can use to confirm if its maxing out your iMac drive or not.

Good, now go away. You were just looking to cancel anyways since you're always worried about the next iteration. Find a better hobby than worrying about the next thing and how it's going to be better than the current one.

Apple has never crippled cable connections if anything they have never talked about them and people had to figure it out with Target Disk Drive, Migration Assistant, etc.

I think the biggest thing is iTunes isnt all that efficient which we all are aware of and its also probably verifying as it restores because back in the day it was REALLY hard to recover a bricked install/update/restore on iOS devices. If you couldn't DFU, you were ****ed.

Now its pretty ****ing hard to brick a iOS device because of how far we have come and not many people restore via cable. Also with cloud restore they added a lot of checks so if the process dies for any reason it doesn't leave you in a ****ed state.

Direct transfer seems to be a better choice. I connected my old and new iPad with a USB-C data cable but it seems that they were still using Wi-Fi for transfer. Luckily it didn’t take long.

AHHHHHHHH. I hate this.

I deleted so many files which took forever. Went to backup on my Mac and it’s been “preparing to backup” for over 30 mins now. I haven’t been able to use my new iPad at all.

Thanks! Didn't know this was a thing w/ USB-C cable.

I think we can test by turning Wi-Fi off on both iPads and then connect them with a USB-C cable (if you have the 2018 or newer) and try the direct transfer option during set up.
But Wi-Fi direct is not slow either.
Anyway, in 2021, I’ll avoid iTunes at all cost.

Aren't the apps re-downloaded on the new device anyways? So maybe that was the WiFi traffic?

I connected mine using an usb c Ethernet dongle I bought for my MacBook Pro. The WiFi signal strength icon never showed and the restore from backup through iCloud completed in less than 30 mins verses the Hour and 1/2 that was estimated. This has been the quickest transfer between iPads yet. I did notice all my photos has not come across. The Photo transfer was automatically paused as the unit was on battery power since the Ethernet dongle was taking up the only port. So far Pleased with Speed

It took 45 mins to restore from iCloud including downloading my apps and messages etc. I’m going to check out drive speed today with my nvme enclosure.
