Hi,

I just received my new iMac 27". My question is, 'can I restore the iMac from my 12" MacBook?' The MacBook has a 512 GB SSD and the iMac has a 1 TB SSD.

Thanks in advance.

Joe

Yes. Easiest would be to backup to a time machine and restore from it. But you could also restart your MacBook in targetdisk mode and use migration assistant as above, but you’d need to connect them with FireWire, thunderbolt, or maybe Ethernet as well?

Starting with a new setup and copying files over might give you a smoother ride, but definitely more of a pain.

Sorry, I wasn't clear, I backed up the MacBook to a hard drive using Timemachine

I just wasn’t paying attention and in my head, clearly in the title. Like I said though, new setup might give you a smoother setup. You might want to copy a few preference folders from /Library/Preferences and ~/Library/Prefences if you go that route though.
