Hey there

My latest iMac (iMac7,1) firmware update FAILED... hard..

I found the Apple support Doc that gave me instructions to download and burn a copy of their firmware restore for my specific model of iMac,

but its not working,

When I press and hold the power button with the firmware disc in the drive, all I hear is one 3-second long tone, and then the startup noise, and then it goes on to the gray apple logo with spinning wheel, but doesn't go beyond this point (that was the original issue, the firmware is busted and the machine can't boot properly)

When I boot off of my install disc, and run disc utility, it freezes when I select my main hard drive to try and run a diagnostic on it...

Any ideas?

ouch
it does not sound good, i would recommend going to the apple store
as if you call them you will have to speak to about 4 idiots before you get someone who actually knows how to use a mac

Well I called earlier today and the girl actually was really good, we figured out that the firmware didnt clean up after itself because it failed.... Which probably borked my Leopardz.

Which also explains why it was rejecting my firmware restore disc.

Anyways, if the reinstall doesn't fix it, I'll go stump the genious bar.

Me resists the idea of packing up my iMac and hauling it in

ahh!!! this frikkin upsets me! i tried doing the firmware update because almost everyday my software update told me it downloaded the newest firmware update for the imac and i would install it. then i finally went to the apple site with instructions how to install the update and i followed them. then... my computer screen stayed off... series of beeps. apparently my imac was doing some SOS thing. had to lug mine over to the apple store and try and get it fixed. only bought mine a month or so ago. this is my first mac... not sure if the switch is worth it now. grr! and maybe tuesday a new model will be out.

You know, problems happen to every computer, PC or Mac, whoever told you macs didn't ever encounter problems, was absolutely wrong.

Trust me, you're just extra sore over this because you spent a lot of money on the mac. Give it time, once you get used to the interface and fix your mac's hardware problems, you'll be glad you DID switch...

Well, you're right. I thoroughly enjoyed the time I had the Mac. Just very disappointed and maybe got my hopes up with how people talk about macs as if they have almost no issues compared to PCs. Anyway, they've already called me and said my mac is ready for pickup so I'll find out the exact problem. Can't wait to get it back, even if it isn't the newest one. I don't think I would've waited those extra 2 months for the update, but now the prices on the older model do make me think twice.
