ok. how about this. when i want to go back to the original software, should i put my iphone in dfu mode or should i just hook it up and click on restore?

I think maybe a little more patience in waiting for a response before a bump and a "wtf? ... its a simple question!" might have been a bit wiser. Two hour gap isn't that long and you probably succeeded in getting people deliberately not responding!

However, since I've just gone through it I'll tell you what I did. But just be aware my new iPhone 3G is first I've had and I've never jailbroken/restored before today so I take no responsibility! In saying that, since there's no messing about with unlocking currently I don't think you can go too far wrong.

I jailbroke mine about two hours ago - basically experimenting and to make sure I could go back and forward. I've now restored it to original firmware and am going to wait till more apps etc are available before jailbreaking again.

I'm not 100% sure you need to go into DFU mode but since I was changing the firmware and DFU is Device Firmware Upgrade I thought it was reasonable to assume I should go back into DFU mode so I did. It would make sense to me but as I say this is all new to me. Certainly I didn't see that it could do any harm and I felt it would be a "complete" restore. In a worst case I would be doing more than necessary but was happy with that.

I didn't have PwnageTool helping with the timing so I just called up clock on screen with second hand to let me time the 10 second intervals.

So, as before when jailbreaking, I had iTunes running, connected phone and powered off. Then pressed power and home for a timed ten seconds before letting go of the power button and timed another ten seconds. At this point iTunes will recognise phone as being in recovery mode and indicate it has to be restored.

From here I simply did restore from iTunes, not pressing option key or anything since I wanted it to use official firmware. It took a bit of time but I knew it was working as soon as I saw Apple logo on phone instead of pineapple (obviously if you didn't use the custom icons in 1st place this won't apply - however I found this a useful indicator).

Only problem I had was when it all booted up again (and it did take some time so be patient) I couldn't restore from my latest backup for some reason and had to pick an earlier one. Again, not a major issue for me.

I hope that's helped and if anyone far more knowledgeable than myself sees any flaws in what I've said can you please let me know...

Steve
