OK, first off I have read the very helpful sticky on how to restore the phone to stock after a jailbreak, and am ready to do that.

However, I need to understand the implications of the "basebands" before I do this and cannot now find where I read somewhere that if you dont do things in the right order or something, the phone can lose its baseband and end up as an expensive ornament!?

I have jailbroken my iPhone 4 on 5.1.1 using Absinthe 2 (no issues and working fine, have installed a few apps and tweaks from Cydia, great). I have not unlocked with ultrasn0w (or anything else for that matter)

The baseband was 04.12.01 (which is what the phone still shows in Settings), but when I connect the phone to iTools it says that the baseband is 04.11.08 (and the BasebandBootloaderVersion is ICE_2_13 if that helps?)

I need educating in what these basebands mean please.

If I follow the restore to stock instructions, will the firmware revert to 04.12.01 and my phone will behave just as it did before and be capable of a factory unlock? or is there something else I need to do (to get that baseband back) or to be aware of?

Thanks in advance!

When you update/restore a device, you update to the baseband that comes with that firmware automatically. Do you depend on an unlock to use your device?

If not, then go ahead and restore/update as normal. If so, you'll need a NO_BB firmware made in RedSn0w. Let me know if you need that and I'll link you to the tutorial.

BB or BaseBand is he radio portion of the firmware.

Some phones are locked to specific carriersa nd cannot be used with diifferent carries. On certain BB's that can be circumvented by either a software or hardware "unlock".

BB 4.12.01 and 4.11.08 at presently cannot be unlocked by either a software or hardware fix.

You can find your current BB in Settings/General/Info at the bottom is says modemfirmware.

If yours is either 4.11.08 or 4.12.01 and your phone is working normally, you either are using the carrier that the phone is locked to ( e.g. AT&T) or the phone is factory unlocked, which means apple sold this one without locking it to a specific carrier, you can use any SIM from any carrier.

Like ZCherub said let us know what your situations is and we can give you some advise.

Many thanks for the prompt and very helpful reply! :)

The reason that I want to restore the phone back to stock is that my contract is coming to an end and the existing provider has offered a free factory unlock. So I intend to do that and sell the phone as factory unlocked and then wait for the "new iPhone".

So I don't depend on an unlock to use the phone, but it would be nice if I can use the free unlock after I restore the phone.

Got it - if you're planning on a factory unlock from your carrier anyway, then go ahead and update to the latest firmware via iTunes - that will both restore your phone to stock, and update the baseband (which won't matter in your case).

Brilliant! That's all I needed to know really (although I would one day like to understand what all these basebands are)

So no danger of losing any of the phone functionality by simply restoring to stock?

Nope! Search member dhlizard's post history - he made a neat chart of which basebands on which devices can be unlocked. It's good and informative reading if you're curious on the subject.

Question

After restoring my phone after a jailbreak it still seems to have some processes from the jailbreak
Springboard etc..
i notice that my battery was draining pretty quickly and used the App Monitor to see what was going on.

Springboard is not an jailbreak feature, its your homescreen.
