Yesterday I quickly and excitedly updated to the iOS 12 beta. Before doing so, I only backed up the most important things (photos and videos).
After updating, everything seemed fine and there was no noticeable data loss. Then, I immediately discovered that one of my most often used functions of the phone, sending pictures in the messaging app, was changed in iOS 12. I feel like it adds more unnecessary steps and makes it worse when using a third party keyboard.
After deciding that this function being changed was annoying me enough to go back, I halfhazardly and stupidly went back to 11.3.1 without making any backups. After going back to 11, it seemed like I had lost pictures and contacts, but they slowly indexed their way in. However, I haven't been able to get messages back.
While I have older backups of messages on my computer, I don't have any from this year. It won't be completely devastating if I can't get them, but I would prefer to. My messages take up a fairly reasonable amount of space, and even though my messages aren't appearing, my phone storage hasn't changed drastically (before, during, or after 12). I think it's possible that they're on the phone, but I'm not sure how to go about recovering them. I've tried the standard recovery apps, but to no avail.
