Hello. I have a 6s and will be finally upgrading to a 12 soon. I have a question about restoring it from a back up.

If I back up some stuff to iCloud and I also do a back up to my 2020 iMac in finder, how do I restore the new iPhone? Do I log into my Apple ID on my iPhone and let iCloud put that stuff on the iPhone and still plug into my iMac and “restore from back up”? I’m not sure how that works. I always just did the restore from back up on my old Mac mini but I wasn’t using iCloud at the time. I recently started using iCloud so I’m not sure the process. Thanks.

You can restore your device from either iCloud or a backup on your iMac. You will be asked how you would like to restore your data when setting up your new iPhone. Find out more here: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204184

Restoring from iCloud is usually more convenient, while restoring your device from a backup on your computer can be faster. There’s no difference, that I am aware of, between the two.

Thank you. But what about the stuff that isn’t backed up to iCloud? Will that stuff still show up? I was curious how that stuff would end up on the phone If it’s not in the iCloud back up, which is why I wondered if the iMac back up was needed for those things not in iCloud and then also do the iCloud restore to get that stuff on the phone. Thanks again.

Take photos for example — You can choose whether to store photos in iCloud or just on your device. When stored in iCloud, those photos won’t be included in a backup to iCloud or your computer as they’re not stored on device (but will still be accessible on your new device with or without a restore). However, if you choose not to store your photos in iCloud, then both an iCloud backup and a backup made to your computer will include them.

Apple have another handy article on the two types of backups here: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204136
