Restoring to a new iPhone 6s (or 6S+) while on 9.1 Beta 2.

As I updated last night to iOS 9.1 Beta 2, I realized that in 48 hours I'd be restoring a new iPhone 6S+ and this is my first go around on a Beta. Here is how I think we would need to proceed, considering that the new phones will be iOS 9 out of the box.

1. Enroll the new phone into the iOS Beta program;
2. Update new phone to iOS 9.1;
3. Delete beta profile & reboot (for some reason that is what I needed to do last night to get it to show up);
4. Software update to iOS 9.1 Beta 2
5. Backup old phone.
6. Restore from backup.

Seem right?

Or, you could always install iOS 9 on top of 9.1, create a new iTunes or iCloud backup, and then restore it to your 6s(+).

That wouldn't be terribly hard. There are a lot of websites that mirror the IPSWs for iOS 9, and you can probably even find a direct Apple link.

For the time being, there is no iOS 9.1 beta for the iPhone 6S. You will have to restore your 9.0 backup if you have one.

So, the 9.1 beta won't restore to my new phone tomorrow? Where have you seen this?

I just did a restore to 9.0 and lost almost all of my apps (appears to be the ones recently updated).

I'm worried about this too. I'm hoping that Apple will have a 9.1 beta 2 build ready for tomorrow. Devs will need to test on the new phone anyway, so they should have a build ready.

I was preparing to 'upgrade' from iOS 9.1b1 to iOS 9 general release via iTunes recover mode so that I could use an iCloud backup when I receive my 6S tomorrow.

I wasn't fast enough though, and now I have had to install iOS 9.0.1 on the old phone. Is there any advice on how I can setup the 6S using an iCloud backup despite it being on the original 9 release? Is there an option to upgrade to 9.0.1 as part of the setup/welcome process?

This whole process doesn't seem very 'it just works' Apple-like with respect to restoring from iCloud to a brand new iPhone. Only because the general public will also be on 9.0.1 and not just us tech folk running betas.

9.0 and 9.1 backups are not compatible. You would need to activate the new phone and then restore with 9.1 and use the
9.1 backup...which also means you might have to go into recovery mode to do this...

To the OP, if you remove the beta profile, then DFU your existing device, plugin to iTunes and simply click update in iTunes, it'll slap a fresh copy of iOS 9 on there for you. You won't lose any data. From there you can backup, and then restore your content to your new 6s. Hopefully that helps. There Are numerous threads on downgrading this way, and I can confirm that it does work. Simply remove the beta profile, DFU & plugin to iTunes and click update. Pulls iOS 9 right from the server.

Ok. Attempted to DFU and it wouldn't give me the option to update....it is greyed out. Just restore.

The issue with this is that 9.0.1 has now superseded 9.0 and the new phone will not be on the same version. Hence iCloud backup when you switch your new 6S on won't be possible.
