Restoring using SHSH file on Cydia

Sorry to just jump in, but this seems like a good place to ask questions from helpful people!


I am jailbroken and unlocked on OS 3.1.2 with a iPhone 3GS (new boot). I have my 3.1.2 SHSH file (I hope). I retrieved it with this Umbrella, but it is 64k in size (rather than 66, which is what I've read it should be). What I am trying to understand is just how safe am I to restore?

I want to rejailbreak and unlock as I am having the odd connectivity issue, but I don't want to risk what I have. Is it fairly safe to restore? What I mean is, if it doesn't work (the restore) or my SHSH blob is corrupt in some way, will I be able to get my original system back?

I may be wrong, but from what I remember when I did it, i didn't have to download any file other than the firmware I wanted to restore to.

Just change your hosts file to reject apples server, and shift-restore to 3.1.2 firmware.

If your SHSH is not correct, then your phone will simply refuse to restore. Shouldn't be risking anything.

Just make sure the files are on sauriks servers. Cydia will let u know once opened at the top.. Are u trying to restore back to 3.1.2 or going to 3.1.3?

Folks, he's not trying to use SHSH on Saurik's server. He's trying to use local copies saved with the Firmware Umbrella. And he's not asking how to do it, he's only concerned that the 3.1.2 SHSH he saved may be corrupted.

OP: I have SHSHs stored for my wife's phone and for mine. All six files are 66 KB (65,198 bytes) in size on my MacBook, but if you are on Windows they may be slightly different in size due to the absence of the file type/creator fields.

Thanks for all responses, but thelatinist is correct; I do have my 3.1.2 SHSH blob and I do know how to do this. It is also on Saurik's server, but I have retreived it from there and am planning on using TinyTSS to restore.

I have the SHSH file on both my work laptop and my Macbook at home. I am in front of the work PC and it does say 64Kb (same as I know it says on the Macbook), but Windows is reporting it as 65,198 bytes, same as yours so you have put my mind at rest on two counts as, from what you are saying even if the file is corrupt it'll just refuse to restore and I'll be where I started.

If its on sauriks server, cydia then its alot easier to restore than doing the other trick IMO.

I have a Iphone 3GS 32G 3.1.2 that I unlock with blacksnOw it was working great for 5 months until this week-end that it refuse to boot and got stuck with the apple logo, after several reset I did a restore and viola 3.1.3 got install and not more unlock, I did find a SHSH file save in Cydia using umbrella, that I previously save but I'm unsuccessful in make it work. I follow the instruction letter by letter but when I do Shift and Restore it take me to a folder were is not files other than my stuff
Can someone tell me please what I'm doing wrong?

Did you modify your hosts file ?
