Rethinking which size iPad I need

I currently have a first gen 12.9 (128 GB cellular) and had my mind made up to pick up the next gen 12.9 (256 GB cellular) and trickle down the old one to my son. We're all familiar with what has changed and with iOS 11 coming up, the 12.9 will take a step closer to becoming a computer replacement for a lot of people. My problem is that for work I will always have to use a laptop so it will never be a work replacement for me. And I have a desktop at home that I use for music and photography, so it won't be a replacement for that either (I realize that there are some nice programs in iOS that do these things, but it's a compromise - especially with no mouse support!). I do draw some, and the big screen is great for a lot of things. Yet thinking back on my use and how for the foreseeable future how I will use it, and I am now realizing that the 10.5 would make more sense as a complimentary device for me than the 12.9 does. I'm kind of surprised I came to this conclusion as I would have already picked one up if I haven't been so swamped at work and traveling and now the 12.9 is out of stock locally. So I think I will pick up a 10.5 256GB cellular next week.

I'm sure I'm not the only one to decide on a different size - kind of curious as to which way you went and why.

I think being you own the 12.9 iPad Pro currently and you appreciated its size and Capabilities, the new 12.9 still offers more of an experience using the full iPad user interface, where as the 10.5 uses a 50/50 iPhone user interface, which something to consider. I would consider also if the 10.5 might seem to small, being you were used to having the larger 12.9 all this time, given you plan on retaining your first Gen.

I also have an appreciation for the larger display and now it incorporates Tru-Tone display, it makes if that much better. Especially if add the Smart Keyboard, it serves nicely for a laptop conversion.

Originally I bought the 10.5 but then figured I might want the extra bit of screen, especially since I use the iPad for sheet music. I found the only Apple store within 200 miles of me that had the 12.9+LTE in stock, which took me four hours to get to because there was a major accident. After getting on the employees nerves for a bit because I screwed around in the store for so long comparing the two, I ultimately made my final decision - which was to keep my original 10.5. I do love the big screen on the 12.9, but the 10.5 is ridiculously portable, which for me ultimately drove my final choice.

I looked at both the 10.5" and 12.9" at my local Apple store. I chose the 10.5" for portability. I would buy a 12" MacBook before I would buy the 12.9" iPad. Just my opinion.
