I have my Retina MBP connected via Thunderbolt cable from Apple to a 2011 iMac with Thunderbolt ports. Both machines are on. When I press CMD + F2 on the iMac to change the Target Display Mode, nothing works. I've tried restarting both machines – nada.

Any ideas?

Yes, ordered it from Apple.

I tried the instructions here to reset the SMC but this did not work.

Has anyone tried this with the new rMBP? This is driving me nuts!

Discovered the issue. The option "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" in System Preferences > Keyboard must be unchecked.

how has your experience been with this? i just picked up a thunderbolt cable today. i find that when the rMBP puts the display to sleep, it seems to lose the connection to the Target Display. Are you finding this?
