Hey - So I had my MacBook Pro 2012 set up so that every time the password screen appeared I could simply hit the 'return' key and I would be logged in. (I know it's not very secure but that's ok right now.) I have backed up erased everything from it and reinstalled the macOS as a new computer so it will run faster. However I know can't remember how to set the password so I only need to hit the return key.

Anyone know the solution to this?

Thanks in advance.

There was no password set. You had "show list of users" turned on in the login options and you simply pushed return to select the user, which logged you in because there was no password.
