return of the RSD

My MB like everyone else has gone through repair and since then was working fine. Recently after i updated to Mac OS X 10.4.8 the RSD HAS RETURNED. Al though it is not as frequent as the last time but I have had it few times already.

Should I go for apple care or do you think it is just something else other than a RSD.

just got the Logic board changed for my Macbook.Past 2 days no RSD.Just would like to know how many of you guys has updated to Mac OS X 10.4.8 and what are the chances of RSD reoccuring?
Still on OS X 10.4.7 on the safe side.

just out of interest did you get the old heat sink or the new one? because apparently the old one doesn't completely solve the problem (hence a new design heatsink).


Am getting one when they finally manufacture enough so just interested in whether it would happen to mine when i get it back!

Apple center replaced the Logic Board which just came in guess should be with the new heat sink.I need my MB urgently for some important projects and they managed to pull the somebodys stock for me first.

If you are still using 10.4.7 I say keep using it coz my random shutdown returned right after I updated to 10.4.8
I was able to get hold of the customer service rep and he ssaid apple finally got a solution and of course b y now you might all know that it is the new heat sink. So, mine is setup for 2nd repair and am sick of this crap.

For people who are planning to buy macbook now I say that you wait at least for the 2nd revision coz, you never know you might even miss core 2 duo by a hair. More importantly, because you wouldn't worry about ur macbook shutting down on you.

my friend has changed the logic board twice for his macbook, it still has the rsd issue, and then he contacted apple again, then apple was putting his macbook service for hold until a new logic board and a new heatsink on stock. 2 days ago apple contacted him to take his book for service because the new logic board and a new heatsink is on stock. he took it back to apple, then yesterday the service is done and he took it back home and finding the macbook still suffered the damn rsd. he is really pissed with apple now since his macbook is the first mac he ever had.

i feel pity for him.

my friend's macbook is the early production item. so did mine, i too have suffered the rsd, but apple changed the logic board and removed the silicon on the heatsink, its been fine since then.

no idea. but my friend is surelly really pissed off right now. i can understand his feeling somehow. i mean, damn man. 3rd logic boards and still rsd. i imagined being him after arrived at home with the new logic board for the third time and while browsing internet, the macbook BAM!

when i had the problem, i had the logic board replaced. That was a couple of months ago now, and i haven't had a problem since. The people at the shop are getting instructions from Apple to start replacing heatsinks, not logic boards, now. Ill edit this post if i have a problem again

the thing that really pisses me off is Apple has known about the RSD issue but when i comfronted the technical guys they act as if this is something new to them which they never heard of.I had the RSD issue since the first day i got the MB but when i call Apple center was told this is nothing serious but problem with Intel compatibility.
I lived with the problem for one month until the MB could'nt boot at all.
thank GOD because of this i was introduce to Macrumors forum.
I salute those that has contributed and my advise is if you need technical support don't go to Apple but here instead.

my MacBook is going in for repairs tomorrow, I let them order the parts first so I didn't have to wait so long to get it back useing it with all the faults in the meanwhile... and they said apple changed the logicboard replacement with new heatsink instead... so they probably found there really is no problem with the logicboard & only the heatsink needs fixing, I asked why: because of faulty sensors causing the macbook to shutdown... I've read some posts here about fixed macbooks getting the RSD back in time :s I really hope that won't be the question with mine... or I might decide to tell them to get stuffed at apple... really... fixing things for a short while... I mean it took 1month to have the yellowing coming back... :s

anyone had his/her macbook repaired on both issues and have no problems whatsoever since??

BTW the bezels were replaced on 8aug... maybe they didn't had the right parts and took it from another one??

my sisters 1.83 is way beyond yellow now, and it even has a big gash on the top casing...how i have no idea. surprisingly enough she couldnt care less about the discoloring and the casing damage so long as its never been dropped and the screen itself is completely scratch free...that and RSD free. the yellowing stinks, but i personally would never ever send it off to any repair center just to have that replaced, since its only a cosmetic issue. instead id simply try to convince the "genius" to just order the part and have it done in store.

i noticed on the apple support forum that many people are no longer having the MLB replaced; only the heatsinks and what appears to be a connection cable. mine had the heatsink/logicboard combo repair..hopefully it got this supposedly new heatsink, rather than an identical one.

they allways repair it here locally, I never send things to apple, I need my macs for work so I can't miss them much, I could have left it there 2 weeks ago but instead they ordered the parts and called me today to tell me they're in...

my MBP is currenty in the shop for the second time for the RSD issue. Started doing it again a month after I got it "repaired" the first time. I'm crossing my fingers this is the last time I have to send it in but I'm not holding my breath. I wish they would just give me a working macbook.

I used to be amused reading the RSD thread, since I never had the problem, till I upgraded to 10.4.8 last Sat. I had one RSD/day on Sun and Mon. Thank god I haven't had one yesterday and today.

Although the two RSD I experienced, I won't really call random. In both cases it happened after I was switching among different wireless access points. The days the RSD did'nt occur I just kept whatever WAP my MB connected to after it booted up.

I was wondering if other sufferers notice a correlation between RSD and Airport.

your hard drive is probably has bad sector right now. i too lived with the rs problem until the macbook couldnt boot at all. because i really need to use my macbook because the company stock is within that laptop.

after they fixed it, opening a finder window would take 1-2 minutes to open, than i returned it back to apple. they changed the hard drive. lost all my data. luckily i did a backup for my company's stock few days ago before the macbook couldnt boot. but its a pain in the arse though since the backup is not really up to date.

from now on, im backing up daily.

Check the system.log in system profiler. if the previous shutdown cause is 0 then its normal, but its a weird number something like 75, or 82, then your macbook is getting the syndrome. u better knock on wood.
