How far over the limit are you? Since you're willing to pay the restocking fee, they might let you do it if you go back to the same store where you bought it if it's only been a few days.
I guess it depends what mood the store manager is in as to how much over you really are. Also if you buy an iMac that same day they might but expect to pay out the restocking fee. If you are really unhappy with it due to heat or noise then just from a CS side of it you may get what your looking for but then again...

I'm just fed up with their laptops. This is the second one in a row that has had a bent hinge right out of the box, but they won't fix it. The harddrive is already making whining/clicking noises and applications have been quitting -- makes me almost sure the harddrive is ready to go.
I'm really pissed off about the hinge though. I bought this to replace a computer basically only because of that.
I won't have a chance to bring it in to see what they say about the harddrive until Saturday, but I'm sure they'll give me the runaround like always. "We can't recreate the problem." BS.

I purchased an 17" intel iMac today and it is too big for my study !! I can make adjustments but just feeling a little silly. A 17" would have been fine but it's a lot bigger than that...

If it's within 14 days (AFAIK), you can return it and pay the restocking fee with no questions asked. If you trade up to the MBP, they might not charge you the restocking fee at all.
What's the drive's SMART status? If the whining isn't constant or at least relatively frequent and the SMART status is verified, then there's nothing they'll do about it, so you might as well not bother taking it in. I'd only bother if you're sure that the whining and clicking is of the unhealthy variety and if you're confident it will happen while you're there.calebjohnston said:

I just returned my MacBook because I wanted a MacBook Pro instead. It was over the 14 day period. I kindly told them that I wasn't satisfied with the build quality of the MacBook and would like to retunr it to get a Pro instead. It worked, probably because I would therefore be paying more money to them in the long run.
