I downloaded Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory earlier and I completely hated it. I joined a server and had no idea what to do or anything and the graphics and physics are terrible. Now if I could understand what to do then maybe I could forget about the graphics and physics but I kept getting killed by the enemy from about 10 miles away! I mean Deus Ex has better graphics and that was released in 2000. If anyone can help me or dislikes the game too then feel free to reply. I'm getting a MBP and would like some good online games to play so if suggestions can be made on essential games to get or something that would be great too. Thanks :)

one major issue with the game is aimbot. there are alot of server that allow aimbot so it really sucks getting killed. this game is for people who like quake. i my self like americas army better. but this is one of the few univesal binary fps there is, that is free. i wish someone would redevelop america's army for the mac again.

maybe i will actually go buy battlefield but it seems to be a hit or miss situation to make it work. oh well.

anyhow i will still play because it has quick respawn times. and i can just jump into it. did i mention i like the fact that it is free....

It's great that it's free but for newbies it's hell. I haven't a clue, I just keep getting slaughtered.

I used to love Return to Castle Wolfenstein!

Does Enemy Territories work on OSX and do you have a link for me to download?

Thanks,
M

You'll have to give the game a chance. When I first started I thought it was a bit wacky, but after a week, I WAS HOOKED. I neglected all my homework back in high school and played ET till sunrise, regretfully. You'll be good in no time, just ask for help in games.

For a new player, you'll want to look for a few things on the server list:
1. Avoid FF, friendly fire, games. Filter them.
2. Campaign mode. I recommend the 6 original maps(oasis, battery, gold rush, radar, railgun, and fuel dump), rotating 3 at a time.
3. ET pub servers
4. # of players generally 20-30
5 Punkbuster and team balance on
6. XP save if you must, I generally avoid it. Only benefit is that you rack up XP and save your promotions and abilities for a period, ranging 1 day to 1 week.
7. Clan servers, avoid them for now.

You'll obviously want to have favourite servers so that you can be familiar with all the regulars. Most of them aren't dicks, they'll be glad to help.

You'll want to start off as a field op or an engineer. Field ops feed ammo, send artillery and airstrikes, generally, you should kill the most. Engineers are essential to missions, being one will help you learn objectives. Avoid being a medic at first, because they start games with only one clip and one nade. Benefit is that you can heal yourself and others. Most of the time, you'll be screaming for ammo that'll never come, so can't rely on field ops, you'll have to resort to picking up enemy smgs. Once you're confident in your skills, however, go medic and rambo the hell out of the people. It's the most fun class, second only to soldier.

If you have the time, and you're still willing to play, you must go to this site. Provides you with many strategies, and it explains all the classes and how to play them. It also teaches you basic scripting so you can use commands and shortcuts to help you in the game.

Well I'm into now, got the idea pretty much :) some nice guys on the game so it's all good :)

I'm downloading this right now.

What I'm looking for is a Mac FPS that I can play over LAN with 3 modern Macs. Someone recommended this game. I'm hoping I can maybe set up my own private games? I guess my main question is, is there a good AI. The guys I play with are FPS noobs, so they don't want to play against me, so I'm hoping we can go 3 of us vs the AI, if that's online, fine, over LAN would be even better.

Is this what I'm looking for?

You should be able to do this, however, you may need to download the stand alone server execuatable and then apply whatever mods you want. I dont recall the in-game hosting option having any bots availible, but I have played on servers with bots so its possible

Hmm ran into 3 roadblocks. First, the game/my OS choked on me having 4 monitors - it asked me which of the 4 I wanted and then when I changed the resolution (mostly 4:3 options, guess I should expect it, kinda old) and then even when I quit out my OS was totally confused - like it got which screen was which mixed up and resolutions were totally confused - I won't try to explain it but it was totally messed up and I had to reboot to sort things out.

Secondly, from what I read the dedicated LAN server needs to be a dedicated machine. Obviously with a Mac Pro I have horsepower to spare, but I don't know that I'm geeky enough to figure out how to run both server and client.

Thirdly, the no bot thing - the FAQ from planetwolfenstein said there's no bots - some hack/mod might be possible, like you said, but probably beyond me.

Worth pursuing? My goal is 3-Mac FPS co-op killing bad guys without boot camp.

hmm

1) It may be necessary to disable multiple monitors before playing. Kind of a hassle, but certainly worth doing at least once just for proof of concept. Not such a big deal if this is just a one time lan party type thing

2) A dedicated server for 30 players should be it's own machine. A server for 3 people does not. Just host it on the mac pro. It may come down that a dedicated server isnt necessary anyway, I just didn't want to preclude it's use.

3) Bots are certainly possible, as most of the servers now seem to ber unning them. Bots are not included in the installation, but there are plenty of mods that include them, as well as extra maps, gameplay modes, etc. W:ET has a substantial modding community.
See List of bot mods

It is up to you to decide if it is worth pursuing. I wouldn't rule it out until you've at least spent an hour or so attempting to set it up and test it. As for other suggestions, lets keep that in this thread

1 do i need mods to play cause every time it tells me i need map or mod of some sort
2 if i need mods to join game: How do you add mods to a mac ppc g4 tiger 10.4.11, I downloaded elite mod and jaymod217 and cant work out how to install them, I read the pdf with jaymod but dont understand it at all
