I recently purchased a 2009 8 core which came with an Apple RAID card and am in the process of refurbishing it. First thing I did was to add a SSD boot and clone the system to it. Second thing I did was to pull the RAID card, reformat the single JBOD system disk previously attached to the RAID card and clone the system back onto it from the SSD. This resulted in two bootable disks which both worked fine.
However, there is a big problem with the fans since I pulled the RAID card. The system ran nice and quiet (in fact barely audible, albeit under no significant load) when the card was installed. Without the card, the fans rev up to high speed as soon as I boot up from either disk and they stay revved. This is unacceptable because of the noise (sounds like a blow dryer on high), but more importantly I am worried about premature failure of the fans and needlessly sucking in lots of dirt and dust into the system. I have seen accounts of similar sounding fan problems which occurred after flashing the firmware to 5,1 or adding a third party video card (neither of which apply here), but none resulting from pulling an Apple card. Could this be a PRAM glitch, or could the HD previously controlled by the card (or even some other component than the HD) now be communicating something to the system that the card had been hiding? Alternatively, could the card have been providing some input into the fan control that needs to be now manually set or redirected? The HD checks out OK in Tech Tool Pro.
Got this system around a week ago and no mention was made of the non-standard configuration, so I can return it if need be but the window for return will soon be closing. Does anyone have an idea as whether this problem can be cured, or if it indicates something fried on the logic board? Are there utilities for tweaking fans and would this ordinarily be done? Any insights greatly appreciated.
