I just wanted to share my story of returning a MacBook for the updated version that came out today. I purchased a MacBook in an Apple store in a different state about seven days ago. After I read about the update today, I called the local Apple store and asked if they would exchange my MacBook for the updated version and if they would waive the restocking fee. They checked with the manager and said that it would be no problem. No hassle. No argument. No problem that it was from a different state.

When I arrived at the store, they were very helpful and the exchange was transacted in a few minutes. Very simple. No restocking fee. I am very happy with the level of service. This is my second (third, counting the exchange) Apple notebook and I will continue to be an Apple customer.

I was curious though, what are the logistics behind a new hardware upgrade like this? The Apple store had the computers in the day of the (non) announcement. Who at the store knew about the upgrade? Just the managers? I assume the shipments came in before today. Are they kept under wraps? What happens to the old MacBooks? What happens to the one that I returned? Just curious.

So far I'm enjoying the new machine and laboring over configuring it to my preferences and moving music and video over. It will take a bit getting used to Leopard, but I can tell it's a great OS already.

From what I have been told here in the UK is that a shipment arrives at the store wrapped up in black with an instruction saying do not open until a certain time.

The store doesn't know and I don't think the managers know either...

Seems I am not the only one getting good treatment from Apple:)
I did pay the restocking fee but I had the 2.16 C2D for 43 days and they exchanged it without any problems whatsoever.

Yeah. I read your previous post regarding this. Pretty good customer service. I wonder if they're being extra nice after the iPhone bad publicity. Either way, it's nice to reap the benefits.

Take care!

that's great news. it really seems like Apple is determined to keep its existing customers for life.
