Just wondering what people's opinions are. I'm split. Although I think the iPhone is great, it is currently a bit buggy (see thread on iPhone bugs in Troubleshooting section) and has some software weaknesses (see sticky thread on software updates in main iPhone section) some of which are borderline tolerable for me. When this Friday (I bought it on June 29) comes without any software updates, I may hence have to bring it back. Apple promised software updates, but who knows how much they're willing and able to fix, and within what time span? I'm curious to hear about the strategy of other's.

i think planning to return it without software within the first two weeks is a really poor idea. you already know what you get when you buy an iphone. if you're looking for features or bug fixes with a software update, wait until the software is released and then buy.
I am expecting at least a month before any updates. You should have had a choice for those of us who are mostly happy and aren't necessarily counting the days until an update. My phone works great for me and any improvements or fixes will be nice, but my satisfaction with the iPhone doesn't depend on them.

So you really are making a false choice for people who are just happy with their phone because you're pinning satisfaction to future updates.

There isn't one. If there were, it'd show up in iTunes. Not to mention it'd be all over the Mac sites like a rash. (maybe that's not the best analogy, but you know what I mean)
Unless software issues are keeping you from using your iPhone, be patient. There will be updates. The worst problems seem to be some random crashing of a couple apps, which pick up where they left off when restarted. Nothing has prevented virtually nonstop use of mine since the 29th. It's only going to improve with time. Not only will bugs be fixed, but functionality added (maybe not in the .01 rev, but most likely within a matter of months).
No. I trust that Apple will release a slew of updates in a few weeks rather then 1-2 every few short weeks.

Good point. I had in mind that the "happy as is" people sort of fall in the first category. I agree thought it's not very clear at all. I consider myself pretty happy btw, just not sure if I'd be happy with it *for two years* if some of the major bugs wouldn't get fixed at all. If you don't find any bugs being major, good for you (I mean it)!
Yeah, I love my iphone. The only issue I have with mine is instability in Safari when playing music, but using the jivetalk beta for iPhone while listening to tunes is not a problem at all with stability, which is the main time I'd want to listen to music while using the internet functions.
I have a good battery, no dead pixels, my phone is loud enough that I need to turn it down sometimes (totally subjective, but I think my phone is plenty loud), calls sound good, people don't have any problem hearing me, even with Apple's headphones and the small included mic.
I barely use SMS, I don't even care that the phone has a camera at all, let alone that it can't do video. The only thing I've used the camera for is snapshots of folks on my contacts list and maybe take a picture of something funny to send to someone who doesn't have a phone capable of mms, so I sent it via e-mail.
I never bothered to set up voice dial or speed dial on any of my previous phones anyway, so that isn't a feature I miss either.
I'd rather use headphones than stereo bluetooth, I don't even have a bluetooth adapter for my computer, so I couldn't sync via bluetooth even if the phone had the feature. I don't want work to follow me home, so I don't care about lack of proper exchange support, I can always use outlook web access anyway if I really need to check it.
It'll be great if some of these things get added through updates, but right now the only thing I'd ask for would be a headphone adapter with controls like Shure's upcoming adapter or just a brand new set of headphones from someone like Shure that include controls for handling calls and skipping tracks.
Extremely happy with the phone, and even with ATT service in my area.

I bought the iPhone after I played with it pretty thoroughly. Even though it doesn't have Voice Dialing, I caved in and forked over the cash, because it's that good! I also absolutely loathe the POS, sorry excuse for a user interface that I had to deal with on my SLVR (and every other phone I've used).
There are definitely bugs and missing features (VOICE DIALING!), but they will be addressed in time. I bought the phone for what it does NOW.
