Revert To - does it work for word saved documents?

I lost a huge project I was working on when I saved the wrong file. I had saved previous version of it but when I hit the "Revert to" tab it wasn't highlighted so I couldn't recover any previous versions.

Does 'revert to' only work for Pages Documents and not docs .docx saved in Word format????
