I’d like to stop using the developer beta updates on one of my devices when the official release of iOS 17 becomes available.

Am I correct in my understanding that if I disable the developer update option, when the next public update becomes available I will be given the option of installing it over the previously installed beta version?

If this logic is correct, I should be able to disable the beta updates and install the released version without first having to do a restore to an older release version first, correct?

I accidentally deleted my backup I had saved with iOS 16 and don’t want to have to reinstall all my apps, etc manually.

Thanks

You can either:
  • Turn off the beta updates and wait for the public release next month or
  • Put your iPhone in recovery mode, connect it to Mac/iTunes (PC) and "Update" to retain your data
    • You can also download the IPSW from the developer portal and shift + "Check for Update" on PC or Option + "Check for Update" on Mac to select that IPSW to update to that build.
If you encounter issues after downgrading, you may need to "Restore" your device and then restore your backup (you may create a backup after downgrading but the issue may or may not be resolved if the issue is also backed up).

Correct, you can turn off beta updates at any point in the beta cycle, even though it would not make much sense leaving the beta now, half way through.

What I did last year with iOS 16 public betas and will do this year with iOS 17 will be turning the beta updates off once we get to the iOS 17 release candidate (RC). Last year I did it all OTA, however some people here prefer updating with IPSW files downloaded from Apple’s development portal.
