Hey guys! It's been a while since I've posted, but I thought I'd give a review on the SGP Linear EX Slim. I have owned in the past: Belkin Grip Candy, Speck Candy Sheer, Case Mate Pop! (with kickstand), Otterbox Commuter, Caze ThinEdge, SGP Neo Hybrid EX.

Of the cases mentioned, so far, I have found the SGP Linear EX Slim to be the most tolerable.

The Good:
Bulk: This bumper case has a slim design that adds little bulk to the iP5. I don't have exact measurements, but in comparison to the other cases I've sampled, the only case that was thinner was the Caze ThinEdge.

Design: I think this case is either a love it or hate it type of case. Many wonder why the entire case isn't sold in red, blue, and all of the other colours. I have purchased the Red/Black combo, and the all Black combo. The all black pretty much mimics the natural look of the iPhone. Some mis-coloured grey buttons do take away from the sleekness, however. The metallic red is bright, has not faded over 2 months of use, and has not had any scratches are noticeable let alone compromise the integrity of the colour.

Drops: The case holds up well when tested. My dad was using his Linear Ex Slim outside while gardening, and his phone dropped out of his pocket directly onto concrete. The case came apart, but the phone was protected by the Steinheil screens, and snapped back together without a problem. No scratches were evident on the phone.

Side Skin Friendly: Because of my undiagnosed OCD, I used GhostArmor side skins on my phone with this case. It is firm and tight with this as opposed to naked, and there is better response in your buttons if you do not use a side skin. Being someone who tries to protect the aluminum siding as much as possible, I'm glad to say that without side skins the phone has not been damaged.

The Bad:
Slippery! This case has no rubber or silicone to allow for some stickiness! There have been several times where the phone has slipped out of my hands, which makes it liable to falls!

Adapter Friendly? Unfortunately no. The Lightning-to-30pin adapter will not work, and you will have to file down the head of your 2nd party lightning adapters in order for them to fit in the cutouts for this case.

Cutouts: Win some, lose some! Most of the cases on the market that are very slim have cutouts for the headphones that are too restricting, however, I have been able to use my Skullcandy Fix-In-Ear earbuds without any extra cords or connections. This cutout does NOT allow for ALL headphone sizes to be used. My Steinheisser Circumaural headphones do not fit in this jack.

Buttons: The buttons have terrible tactile feel. The volume buttons are pretty much flush with the case and they are very hard to press. The power button is better, but still suboptimal. I might have to put some stickers or tape to enhance this, but out of the factory it's quite difficult. Tactile response is a little better if you're not using side skins.

Overall: It's really a personal preference, so I try to be as objective as possible with these reviews. My personal preference for a case is slim design and optimal protection. My Caze ThinEdge was number one with this, but the cheap design, the fading colour, and the terrible cutouts for the buttons makes me prefer the SGP Linear EX Slim to it.

HOWEVER: With the increased availability of the Power Support Flat Bumper, I will be on a search for obtaining this in the next month. I believe that finally, since the launch of the iP5, I will get something to satisfy me!

I will add some close up photos of the case later, but here's a low-res for now.

Thanks for writing this. I want to try a bumper case, but I've been trying to decide between the Thinedge, Neo Hybrid EX, or Linear EX Slim.

I have this bumper on my iPhone 5 and I love it and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a bumper style case. I have purchased a total of 5 bumpers for my iPhone 5 since I got it (including the spigen neo hybrid) and this one is by far my favorite.

What I love about it:

1. It looks great on the phone, it's a very clean design that is appropriate in all situations, whether it be work or play.

2. It feels great in the hand, it is a hard plastic material so it isn't particularly grippy as it was already mentioned but I also don't find it to be particularly slippery either. I personally haven't experienced it slipping out of my hand or dropping my phone any more frequently than usual.

3. It's a great fit on the iPhone. My problem with the neo hybrid was that the silicon layer of the case causes it to shift on the phone, especially when taking it in and out of your pocket and I found myself constantly having to adjust the case. This bumper doesn't have that problem obviously being a completely hard case.

4. Offers the perfect amount of protection for a bumper case. It pretty much covers every part of the sides of the phone preventing it from getting scratched. I've also dropped the phone maybe twice from about waist level and there was absolutely no damage to my phone.

The not so great:

1. The cut outs for the headphone jack and lightning connector are quite small. I have tried at least 5 car chargers that simply will not fit while this case is on. It's not a huge problem for me because I have been able to use a spare lightning cable with an adapter for my cigarette lighter for charging in the car but it is something to note. I also am able to use my Bose headphones while the case is on but I can definitely see some other headphones having a problem with the tight fit of the case in that area.

2. As was mentioned before the buttons are quite flush to the case. I didn't find this to be a problem initially when I was using the zagg hd full body invisible shield protection in combination with the case. When I traded in my zagg for the spigen glad tr slim screen protector I found that the buttons lost a lot of their tactile feel, I'm assuming that is due to the thickness of the glass tr slim. So this may or may not be a con to you based on what kind of screen protector you are using.

Overall as I mentioned before I love this case and when it comes to bumpers this one gets my vote!

Thanks for writing this. I want to try a bumper case, but I've been trying to decide between the Thinedge, Neo Hybrid EX, or Linear EX Slim.

I have experience with all of those cases. Here's a quick summary of my thoughts.

Neo Hybrid EX: You will get tired of fitting your phone back in place with this bumper when it loosens up after a month of use. Not worth the money that Spigen charges for their products!

Caze ThinEdge: Great Case! Thin, minimal design takes little away from the phone. Cutouts are pretty good, most headphones fit, 2nd party lightning adapters still an issue. Cutouts are for power button and volume buttons, and the recess makes them difficult to press. The plastic used is grippy and the phone won't fall out of your hands.

Linear EX Slim: Sleek design, enhances the look of your phone. Cutouts are troublesome, some headphones won't fit, 2nd party lightning adapters wont fit. Also, althought you don't have cutouts for the vol/power buttons, the buttons provided are flush with the body the bumper. They are also a light grey colour that takes away from the look of the phone. Also, this bumpers material makes the phone VERY slippery!

It's a toss up between Caze and SGP Linear IMHO. Either choice is a good one!

Edit: added slipperiness to Linear EX critique.

Thanks, again! That was really helpful.

I guess my decision boils down to: buttons or cutouts? lol

Got my Linear EX slim case today, not bad. But are the buttons supposed to be so wobbly?

I been using spigen linear ex slim for 1 year. And been changing from 1 to another. But always in the same color(white). The bad thing about this case is only the white color turns darker and reddish after the first month of use.

Can someone post a pic? Coz im planning to buy this case :) thanks!

The buttons are pretty wobbly. There is a fix, you can put some duct tape on the inside of the bumper buttons to increase the tactile response.

Follow Up

Hey guys, I thought if follow up on this thread after months of usage with SGP's Linear EX Slim. After 6-8 months worth of use, the case has held up structurally, but has suffered aesthetically. Take a look at the pics:

Thanks for the update. Got a metal slate one, about 2mos in now. So I guess by 6mos it will be like that, bummer.
