Earlier this month, Twelve South launched the ButterFly 2-in-1 MagSafe Charger, and it may be the best multi-device travel charger that's come out to date. The "ButterFly" name comes from the shape, as it has two magnetic sides connected by a small strap in the middle.

When folded up, the ButterFly is just two inches around and fits in a palm or a pocket, making it easy to transport. Unfolded, there's a 15W MagSafe charger on one side for the iPhone, and Apple Watch charging puck on the other side. The Apple Watch charger supports fast charging for the Apple Watch Series 7 and later, allowing for quicker charging speeds.

The Apple Watch charger can be used flat or it can be popped out to support Nightstand mode and bands that can't charge in a flat orientation. The MagSafe side is a simple charging puck that connects to MagSafe iPhones and other devices like the MagSafe AirPods.

There is a USB-C port on the ButterFly to power it, and Twelve South includes a braided black USB-C cable and 30W power adapter. There are swappable plugs so that you'll have the plug you need if you're traveling to another country. There's a standard plug for the U.S. and Canada, a two-prong plug for Europe, a three-prong plug for the UK, Ireland, and other countries, and a plug that works in Australia, New Zealand, and China. You can swap in the one you need and store the rest for trips.

The ButterFly is made from a silver aluminum material that matches well with Apple's devices, with the two halves of the charger connected by a vegan leatheresque strap. It's an attractive design, and the connection between the two pieces seems like it's secure enough to hold up over time.

Twelve South designed the ButterFly with some clever features, so it is able to work with StandBy on the iPhone. It can fold over in both directions, so it can be used as a Nightstand for the Apple Watch with the iPhone half folded under, or it can prop an iPhone up in the proper orientation for StandBy mode by folding the Apple Watch half under.

Technically you're supposed to fold it flat when you're charging an iPhone and an Apple Watch at the same time, but I was able to put it in a triangle position to get StandBy mode working while the Apple Watch was also charging. I don't find StandBy mode that useful so I doubt I'll use it in that orientation when traveling, but it's an option.

In charging tests, the MagSafe charger did indeed charge my iPhone 15 Pro Max at 15W, and I got the same charging results that I see with Apple's own MagSafe charger. My close to dead Apple Watch Series 9 charged up to 84 percent in a little under an hour, which is what I expect from an Apple Watch fast charger.

If you wear an Apple Watch to bed, you probably know that an Apple Watch fast charger is a must to get enough battery to make it through the day in short charging spurts, so I appreciate that Twelve South included fast charge capabilities.

Both the Apple Watch charging puck and the MagSafe charger can charge the MagSafe AirPods, which makes this 2-in-1 charger almost as versatile as a 3-in-1 model.

Bottom Line

This is the most compact travel charger I've tried, and I have no complaints, except for the price tag. $130 is expensive, but it is using two of Apple's proprietary technologies - Apple Watch fast charging and MagSafe.

Other than the cost, this is the perfect travel charger and if you're looking for a premium solution that folds down small and works well with the iPhone, AirPods, and Apple Watch, the ButterFly is worth checking out.

How to Buy

The ButterFly charger from Twelve South can be purchased from the Twelve South website or from the Apple website for $130.

When it comes to two in one travel chargers, I’m more interested in something suitable for camping. I just don’t know about a vegan leather strap whether it’ll hold up to the rigors of camping.

I’ve got a battery pack from Amazon that does both. I’m sure it doesn’t deliver MagSafe/Qi 2 power levels and just uses magnets and the higher power Qi 1 charging mode. The magnetic charger for the Apple Watch also has the same failings that most generic ones do (where the magnets aren’t strong enough to hold the watch in place on their own). But it seems more rugged than this does and was a good sight cheaper. It’s a shame, though, since this is definitely an appealingly designed travel charger.

I like it. This is the obvious successor to the MagSafe Duo, with the added benefit of the adapter included. The design is even more “Apple like” than the Duo was. Apple probably would have made it a squircle which wouldn’t be bad either but I like how compact this thing is. I might pick one up but will probably wait for a sale, because I don‘t really need it.

This looks like a nicely designed product, close in a number of ways to something Apple might create.
The only concern I have is the piece that joins the two segments – is this how power is transferred from one half to another? If so, if the synthetic leather deteriorates over time, could that be a point of failure?

I've got the Magsafe Duo and while it suits my needs fine, I wish the apple watch side had fast charging. Other than that, it's perfect. Looks like this one will do that job well, but I'm secretly hoping that apple comes out with a Magsafe Duo update as I prefer that design to this one.

This one's better at half the price:

This is limited to 7.5W charging for the iPhone, and it does not fast charge the Apple Watch. Half the price, yes, better, no.

This looks like a great travel product but seriously there is NO WAY I would buy it for $130! Thank you to others posting here showing links to similar or even better products for a cheaper price.

To Twelve South, this price is seriously an insult to prospective customers! Let us know when it goes on sale when you discontinue the product due to insufficient demand. Thx!

Important point, thanks for noting that.

It also can charge airpods that support wireless charging while simultaneously charging apple watch & iphone.

It's an interesting and intriguing product but for me, NOT a MagSafe Duo replacement. As someone else mentioned earlier in the thread, chargers like these need to stand up to all kinds of environments, including camping. I've taken my MagSafe Duo charger camping and while I have no doubt this would do just fine, I trust my MagSafe duo charger more at the moment.

I got this as a gift and I love almost everything about it, which is the same thing I’d say about my other 12 south products.
I’m keeping my eye on two aspects: the durability of the “vegan leather” strap between the two sides, and the potential for scratches to appear when the two aluminum sides are magnetically put together (such as in nightstand mode). I don’t care about scratches on a travel charger but at this price I could see others being concerned. I have a 14P in an Apple leather case and the iPhone standby charging is not as sturdy as I’d like - a little jostling of the nightstand and it slips/falls down to almost-flat due to the weight of the phone. The watch nightstand mode works flawlessly. The travel chargers are a huge plus for me. All-in-all I like it quite a lot, but it’s not a perfect item

Wait, I thought this thing was a portable battery, but no, I think I misunderstood. This is just a really stylized charging stand. At $130 just for a folding charging stand, that’s a hard pass from me.

Good to know. I’ve found Apples MagSafe cases aren‘t as strong as the nomad case I use, but it sounds like Twelve South could have put stronger magnets in this device in anticipation of this factor.

These $100+ chargers are brutal. As cool as it is, I can't bring myself to pay so much for something that I can essentially already do with chargers I already own..
All charging products are meant to be either replacement or supplemental to what you already own.

If you need to buy additional charging cables and adapters from Apple, you will be shelling out $19 for the iPhone cable, $29 for the Apple Watch cable, and $59 for the dual USB-C adapter. If you need international compatibility, $29 for Apple's World Travel Adapter Kit.

The truth of the matter is, it is entirely possible to spend much less. But companies like Belkin, Nomad, and TwelveSouth are trying to differentiate from the cheap unauthorized knockoffs by offering chargers with more premium design that is also officially certified.

Relative to Belkin, though, which I would usually place in the “Anker” quality range (if I see the Anker [or Belkin] brand on an Amazon listing, I’ll probably go with it over a cheaper no-name offering because I know it’ll usually work pretty well but will still be pretty affordable), TwelveSouth has always been in the “form over function” category for me. I won’t deny that they make attractive products, but I’ve always felt that the flash and style comes at the expense of affordability.
