iPhone Reviving an iPhone 3GS?

I've been given an iPhone 3GS which is stuck in the recovery loop. I've spent hours on the web reading different methods to recover/restore an iPhone, and more hours attempting to restore it but nothing is working for me. I've tried TinyUmbrella and Redsn0w several times with no success. Admittedly, I'm not real sure if I'm doing any of it right

I've managed to recover/save the shsh files for iOS 4.1, 5.0.1 and 5.1, but every attempt I make to restore the phone is unsuccessful. It always stalls on "Waiting for NAND".

I found this article (http://code.google.com/p/iphone-dataprotection/wiki/NANDEpochBrick) which explains what might be going on, but sadly I have no idea what to do with this information. Anyone?

Is this phone dead or is there still some hope?

Plug it into iTunes, if it's in recovery use iTunes to restore it.

I started with iTunes, but it kept ending with an error message - it stalls on the apple icon and activity bar. I tried using different ipsw's but it always ended the same. So I read up on this and many people suggested to use Redsn0w but I've had no success... Any other suggestions?

Are the shsh files for that iPhone or someone else's? Either way you might have to go to 6.1.6 like everyone else.

Yes - the shsh files are for this phone.

I don't care which iOS I end up installing, just so long as it works. I'll try 6.1.6 again, but I thought (I think I read somewhere) that reverting to an earlier iOS was the easiest/best way to revive a "bricked" phone.

If it's bricked then it won't be revived. If it can be revived then it's not bricked.

You can't install earlier iOS that isn't signed by Apply anymore.

Indeed... and this is what I'm trying to ascertain - whether this phone is actually bricked or not.

I thought the whole point of saving shsh files is to be able to revert to an earlier iOS?

It is but 6.1.6 isn't that bad. Besides it's likely to work better than an old firmware if the phones firmware is messed up

I tried restoring to 6.1.6 with iTunes and I get a Error 40 message. So i tried with Redsnow - but when I select the 6.1.6 ipsw, Redsnow gives a message to say it doesn't recognise the ipsw.

I'm running the latest version of Redsnow (9.15b3)... any ideas anyone?

Error 40 is usually caused by firewalls or AV.
