A friend leaving town gifted me this old beast and I am keen to revive. Was locked to another account, had been in a warehouse for 5 years or so, earmarked for recycling from an old school batch at his uni.

It works fine. Am keen to take a peek around whatever OS works stable and comfortable, then decide whether to increase the RAM up to 6GB (2 + 4 i believe possible) and also maybe swap in a 128GB SSD.

Was hoping to simply use recovery and reinstall the OS – but every time I try and enter my icloud credentials 'incorrect password/username' yet it is not incorrect, as I am using the exact same credentials on my macbook air. Curiously, when I do try to log in via the reinstall routine, I get on my macbook appearing a message saying NEW LOGON attempt, with the map and a code to type in, yet that code is not asked for on the imac.

So it appears I need to try make a complete fresh install via USB?? 10.6.8 snow leopard it seems.

As my macbook air only has USB-c, I cannot create a bootable uSB on there without a new USB-c to USB cable.
Can I create the bootable USB with snow leopard via WIndows? Or only through my macbook air??

Can anyone point me to a reliable download?

I assume however I can get this DMG into a bootable USB, I then use startup options and hope using the USB install is not thwarted by this odd issue with signing in as part of set=up with my icloud details (no, there is no option in that segment of setup to create a new account, it just mentions if you do not have an icloud then to create a new account).

please help!

The iMac 20-inch (A1224) are too old for internet recovery. That can't work.
You can find downloads for Snow Leopard -- but that gets to be more struggle each day, finding web browsers that actually will work. What I might suggest is to download the installer for El Capitan, follow the steps to make a bootable USB installer (this works best on another Mac). Install El Capitan on the old iMac (all A1224s will go to El Capitan.
Apple's download for El Capitan is on this support page - https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211683
