Developers cool on Ipad

Despite the heavy demand, the predictions of 6 to 10 million install base, and the increased investments, etc..... Computer World decides to post an article claiming that developers have cooled on the iPad because of the lack of a camera and multitasking.

Was this written by one of the 10 year olds that were spamming comments on Engadget or spamming threads here complaining about the lack of those two very features?

It's based on a survey... that now 80% of developers want to do something for iPad in the coming year. (was 90%, now 80%... which is hardly "cool interest"). What do you want to bet that 3 months from now, it's back up to 95%?

Ahhh.... you must be one of the ones that are upset because the thing didn't include a silly camera. This is a pad, not a phone or camera.

And the survey data this guy bases the entire article on is a load of garbage. You'd have to trend over a year to make a definitive call that anything had 'cooled'. $$ is what drives development, and once developers get an idea of how sales are going they will make their decisions on whether to develop for it or not.

If it were on the back, people would complain because it's not on the front. If it were on the front people would complain that it's not on the back. If they included both, people would complain that the cheapest iPad would start at $600 and run to $1000.

Glass half full.... or half empty... All comes down to how you view it. 80% to me is freaking amazing and gets my hopes up that some very cool apps will show up. The multitasking is a software/OS update and won't effect the installed base when/if it's released. IF Apple has 5 million sold by the end of 2010, and releases the OS with multitasking the dev's who waited will have not only the tech they want, but the installed base to assure they have a shot at success.

Can't blame a dev for holding out for tech that makes their app more relevant if multitasking or running in the background is a part of what they want to do.

I think the article is a bunch of FUD. He's basically saying that since there's no multitasking nor camera that developers won't develop for it.

For the record I'm a developer. Has the iPhone a device with no multitasking deterred developers? Of course we know the answer is no, there's about 130,000 instances to back up my claim Also of all the apps in the App Store probably only 3% take advantage of camera.

IMHO the author does not have sound reasoning to back up his point of view.

Interest has gone from 90% to 80%. That is "cooling." It isn't "plummeting." How fortunate that the article accurately says "cooling" rather than inaccurately saying "plummeting."

Some apps require a camera (barcode scanner, for example).

Some apps require multitasking to work in a useful manner.

If you were planning to make a barcode scanner app as part of the 90%, and now you realize that's impossible, you are no longer part of the 90% and you contribute to it shrinking to 80%.

Get a grip, people. This is just a gadget. If you expect every scrap of coverage to be some kind of breathless Beatlemania hype, you don't understand the role of journalism.

I work in a job that involves a lot of analysis of data. If we are randomly looking at two months in a 24-month period, and one month falls 11%, we notice.

If we are looking at a total of TWO MONTHS, and the thing that changed between those two months is a watershed event (like, for example, the product specs being revealed), and numbers drop 11%, nobody in their right mind would ignore that.

You are bursting into tears because you are incapable of anybody using the word "iPad" without swooning and you are incapable of recognizing that. Big mean old ComputerWorld! "Insulting" (they didn't) your gadget! You paid for it and you don't want anybody to say anything that makes you feel bad about your purchase! Boo hoo, woe is you!
