Does anyone know of a mod to get seperate right and left click on the trackpad? I would get a macbook air right away but the single giant button trackpad annoys me to no end. I like soft large buttons like on an HP.

I think you can set it up like that in system preferences.

I don't mean a software solution. I want two physical buttons for left and right click. I will be using it mainly in windows 7 too.

The only way to do it would be get a regular non apple mouse that has two buttons.
i keep mine set so bottom right corner is a right click

if you're running W7 through Parellels, you can still two-finger click to get the right click, no need for separate buttons

Plus, I think you can set it up in SysPrefs so that clicking the right side = right click and clicking the left = left click (not in front of my Mac or I'd tell you for sure).

I've tried that but it drives me crazy. There is barely any tactile response to clicking it down and no edges means it's hard to find where the right click area is.

I think I may just buy a nice big USB trackpad and cut out the original trackpad. I should be able to just solder the pinouts internally to the left USB port since I won't ever really use it.

Does anyone have the exact dimensions of the trackpad?

Be sure to take plenty of pictures. I'm really looking forward seeing this mod.

Why not just two finger click?

Thats the craziest idea I've ever heard... I love the trackpad for me it is one of the huge pro Apple reasons... And you wanna CUT IT OUT!!!! I wanna see the pictures too, though ;P

Because one finger is easier :D

I work with laptops and I've worked with hundreds of different models/brands and HP/IBM produce the best trackpads I've seen.

Hmm according to some blogs the older models are USB based touchpads so I can probably just rewire another one in there without losing the left usb port. Now I just have to find a nice large trackpad with good buttons.

After you are done, you might see if it will blend.....

Theres something out there. I used it in the early bootcamp days that allows you to set command or option keys as right click.

Thats all I got for ya...

After you do this mod, are you going to be able to close the lid? And is it even possible to "cut out" the trackpad? The Air seems pretty tightly constructed.

seriously...just try it...it's not that difficult, like the guy above said, do it 100 times and then you've got the muscle memory down...I can't believe you'd chop up the MBA like that to get two buttons! good luck.

If you're dead set on two buttons, how about use a mouse instead of ruining a $1000+ machine?

I'd rather try to have two buttons. If I have to deal with having no buttons it'll get thrown out the window anyways

I just use Control + trackpad
