Hi,

Currently i am buying movies off itunes and synching them to my ATV2. I also have a sony bluray player which i had before i went to apple. Am i taking the right direction in starting to stockpile films off itunes as they are only 720p at best and bluray was 1080p which looked awesome on my 50" plasma.

I am thinking of going back to bluray and get a big collection of bluray but worry about how long they will be the best picture quality as dont want to buy all my favourite films in bluray and then have to rebuy them all when the next superhd or whatever its gonna be called comes along. What about 3d bluray? Are they the future?

Matt

If you only plan on watching your films on Apple devices and are happy with the quality of iTunes HD, then by all means keeps getting your movies from iTunes.

If you want a bit of flexibility going forward, go with blu-ray. You can rip/encode them in 720p for viewing on your :apple:TV and you don't have the iTunes DRM restrictions so you'd be able to watch them on non-Apple devices. Also, you obviously can watch them in full glorious 1080p using your blu-ray player. Personally, this is the route i've chosen.

I don't think you have to worry about a progression past 1080p for a while. I'm never an advocate of the wait and see approach simply because technology is ALWAYS improving and if you are worried about having the latest/greatest, you'll either be spending a ton of money every time something better comes out OR you'll never enjoy anything because you'll always be waiting for the next piece of tech.

Just my $0.02.

If you want to keep digital versions, but aren't happy with iTunes' 720p, you can get an blu-ray drive and use MakeMKV to make a .mkv of them, then convert to an ATV-friendly format with Handbrake. It's a bit more complicated than buying off iTunes, but only you can decide whether you think you'll be fine with 720p later.
