So I got a replacement AirPods Pro 2 earbud from Apple and have been having problems because the replacement in on an old version of the firmware - 6F8. I've paired only this new bud to my iPhone.

1) Iphone at 100% charge
2) Tried playing a song for 30 seconds 3-4 times. No update.
3) Left on over night charged next to each other. no update.

any ideas on how to force an update? For me to pair both AirPods they need to be on the same firmware.

I had same issue, unpair new AirPod, make sure case and existing AirPod are paired, have both AirPods and phone on charge. Wait patiently. It updated after a hour or so for me.

Edit to add, that having new AirPod unpaired was important. It will update it even if unpaired in my experience.

ok you are saying pair with the original older AirPod (which has current firmware). then update it in unpaired state?

I sorta fee like that's where I started. it never updated the new AirPods Pro.

Were you able to get it to update?

unfortunately for the airpods to work as a pair or upgrade firmware both are required to be on same firmware if done via the end user case method. i had this problem when i lost one airpod pro 2 i went into store and purchased a replacement left airpod pro 2 and was advised to leave the newer airpod pro 2 in the case with original for an hour , it never worked , it never paired , it never updated firmware. 5 weeks later(probably 15 phone calls after speaking to various staff at different levels for an explanation) finally after sending them to apple i received a brand new pair 3 weeks later left/right(both were not my originals as serial was completely different and i got an additional 2 year warranty as they were the newer USB-C not lightning(my original) so I got brand a new pair/case) .whilst there is some success reported over the internet but for a successful pain free experience of replacing a single airpod they really must be on the same firmware.

my scenario took almost 8 weeks to resolve it would of been less frustrating to simply cut my loss on losing airpod in the first place and buying a new pair. it was never about the cost just wanted a working pair of airpod pro 2 has i really use them a lot be it commuting, relaxing, noise free periods ,working out and so on. good luck hope you don't learn or experience how ***** apple service can be where one or many personnel can completely contradict the other with solutions.

How do you check firmware version of each earbud separately written on the box
firmware is printed on the label on the box of the new one if purchased as replacement. with your original(if you are the original owner with it having been connected to cloud, findmy etc) airpod you should still be able to connect iphone etc so you can check the firmware via the settings on iphone. in your case reading your post you need to be able to connect to older one to view firmware to verify the firmware is mismatched with newer one. in short you need both airpods on same firmware and likely hood now you have tried various methods only way is via apple service to resolve one way or the other. good luck you will need it and patience..ps you cannot update a single airpod in the case matched pair only via case method so apple service will be the answer.

Both of my earbuds were replaced by Apple two days ago, they came with 6F8, later that day they automatically updated to 7A305 and today to 7B19. So they both should be on the same firmware. Just wanted to know if they have mismatched firmware or not.

if they are both on same firmware no issues in terms of firmware upgrade should occur ,the issue here points to either mismatched firmware(likelihood as the OP quotes one airpod replaced not two or a pair) or one dead airpod

Wow this is insane. It sounds exactly like my experience. The one they sent me was on 6f8 and no matter what I do- they dont pair.

if recall 6F8 was what i received initially has a replacement airpod for a lost one it never paired or updated , when i did eventually managed to talk to a service engineer at apple not a genius retail personel he basically said we will have to send you a new pair but that is or was not at his discretion he could only file a report on the issue . as above received a complete new pair /case 8 weeks later .patience is required and it is one thing I lack when it comes to dealing with genius personnel because the answers/solutions vary so much from one person to another.. dont waste your time in keep trying to update firmware , if your existing airpod and replacement are legitimate then arrange to have it sent to apple service and let them resolve it at a cost or may be with luck no additional cost..

I went to the Apple Store and got some info.
The problem is that even tho both of my AirPods Pros are 2nd generation - the one they sent with 6f8 is teh USB-C version. So that's why they won't update or pair.
Even tho both will pair individually with the case, and they are both the same 2nd generation AirPods Pro- the USB-C ones and the Lighting port ones will not work together

Mystery solved.

Their solve was me to buy another AirPods for $100 to match. I pointed out that it was not my fault Apple Support send me the wrong version of 2nd generatiuon and already paid $100 for them- they wanted more $$$ anyway,

unfortunately thats why my patience is zero when it comes too apple store personnel its typical but question is what happened to your original before you got a replacement? if you lost it then there going to go down this path when in store. that said there is no simple solution to resolve always becomes a waiting game. good luck in your pursuit of resolving. as above took me nigh on 8 weeks to get an outcome

My original was fine before I got a replacement if that is what you're asking. I lost it walking home on the street from Jury Duty. Rather than trying to find it...I was like oh I'll save myself some time and just order one for $!00 from Apple. Big mistake!
