With the ringer switched to off and the alarm clock on, I still get the alarm sound. I always thought the ringer switch would turn off all sounds.

Am I missing a step?

No, the Alarm will always sound, no matter what (if it's set).

I think this is a helpful feature - if you forget to turn your phone back onto ring at the end of the night, you miss getting up for work (and also get woken up in the middle of the night by calls/texts). I know most phones also silence the alarm, but I've always found that annoying.

If you don't want the alarm on, just don't set it!

It definitely doesn't turn off all sounds, as the ipod still plays with the switch off.

From the manual...

When set to silent mode, iPhone doesn’t ring or sound any alerts or sound effects (alarms set using Clock do sound). By default, when you get a call, iPhone vibrates whether it’s set to ring or silent mode.

If iPhone is set to ring mode, you can silence a call by pressing the Sleep/Wake button or one of the volume buttons once. Press a second time to send the call to voicemail.

so you cannot tell it to go totally silent then? it vibrates in silent mode?

usually people have the profiles of

Normal - full ringer and/or vibrate
Quiet - vibrate only
Silent - stealth, maybe only lights flash

You can also set it not to vibrate while in silent mode in the settings->Sounds menu.

The default as said is to vibrate.

Seems like a good idea for the alarm to still go off if you have it set to silent. It would be all too easy to leave it in silent mode and forget about it and not get your alarm. People who go out of their way to set an alarm may actually want to receive the alarm don't you think? in a situation where you absolutely cannot afford to get a ring or any noise from your phone just turn it off, that's what I do.

I set up 5 alarms. When I go to bed I choose clock and slide the alarm I want on to the on position. I don't leave them to repeat. Works great.
