Ok, I can ftp into my iphone, add an mp3 that i've changed to .m4r and have it show up in ringtones, but when I try to play it I find that it's dead silent. Help?

Just curious, did you convert mp3 to aac file in iTunes? Then rename from .m4a to .m4r?

No, did I miss that I was supposed to do this step? I was under the impression it was unnecessary. I'm not even sure how to change to aac on leopard/itunes

Ah, now that I converted to aac then changed to m4r I could add it to my itunes and it adds to the ringtones section and syncs, awesome!!
