ringtone tab

hello, im new to the iphone and itunes community, i just bought my iphone yesterday and for some reason i do not have a "ringtones" tab on my itunes page when my iphone is connected. is this because of the version i have downloaded? or another reason, please help, i would just like to use my MP3s as ringtones, im already over the boring selection iphone offers as ringtones.

Thanks to the RIAA, if you have an iPhone with firmware 1.1.1, you're SOL at the moment, aside from paying 99¢ for the songs they will let you buy. If you have a firmware 1.0.2, or earlier, and iTunes 7.4.2, your only option is iToner from Ambrosia.

If you have 7.4.1 or 7.4.0, there are ways to add ringtones (they differ by iTunes version) -- all of them require a AAC file. (Rogue Amoeba has a program that will change MP3s into ringtone formatted AAC files.) You'll have to search the forums for those solutions.

Why couldn't it be ATT making Apple charge per tone? They sell ringtones for $2.50 and are the only company with iPhone. It makes sense to me that somewhere in the contract with Apple ringtones are mentioned. RIAA is still responsible for the way iTunes does ringtones. They make you buy the song from iTunes to make sure that you legally own the song. If not you could steal any song and use it. I think the issue is iTunes being able to know what songs are from legally bought cd's and other internet music stores. I am 100% certain the RIAA is not ok with people making ringtones from songs they stole.

When the ringtones were first activated, I had to connect to the iTunes store once to get the ringtones tab to be activated in iTunes.

You are correct that the RIAA isn't cool with people making ringtones from illegally-obtained music; then again, they're not cool with people even HAVING illegally-obtained music.

The main fact here is that Apple is preventing all of us, even those of us who buy CDs and rip our music legally (not from iTunes), from being able to use the music we properly own as ringtones. This may be part of a deal they have with AT&T or the music companies, but Apple have gone out of their way to make it nigh-impossible for us to get around their ringtone system.

Again: The RIAA considers ringtones to be derivative works. If you legally own a song, the RIAA says you should be able to make a ringtone out of it for FREE. This is not a problem on (for example) Windows Mobile, where you can copy any WAV file you want to the phone and use it as a ringtone. Apple and the music industry, NOT the RIAA, are the jerks in this case.
