Just drag the MP3 from iTunes to garageband. Cut and edit as you like and when you are done, chose "share" and "send ringtone to iTunes" - thats it.

Rename to m4r doesn't work for me...

I picked up a 3G yesterday and have read the posts regarding cutting the clip down to <= 30 sec then renaming the file to m4r, then importing it into itunes as a ringtone and syncing it over to the phone.

I did all that and though it shows as a ringtone in itunes, it is not available as a ringtone on the phone. I do not yet have an app to view/manipulate the files system to see if the file actually copied over.

Forgot to mention i am currently syncing on a PC. Plan to fully cross over when I pick up a macbook(pro) sometime next week.

Make sure you check the box in the ringtones tab (with iPhone plugged in) that says "sync ringtones".

Got tired of playing around, downloaded iRinger, and a few minutes later, I had two new ringtones synced and set up on contacts. Worked like a charm.

hmm.
i just used garageband (on mac / iLife) to do so.
import a track then cut it to 30 secs then export to itunes ringtones.

ive also tried the switch from m4a to m4r
it works for unprotected music as long as the clip is < 30 seconds.
just remember to click on ringtones when connected and then click sync ringtones.

Then you need to hit "send song to disk" or whatever it is. It will give you a .m4a file and all you need to do is change the "a" to an "r" and when you open it up in iTunes it will be in the ringtones folder.

Yup, I've got like 30 ringtones now on my 3G using the simple .m4a to .m4r method. You only need to make sure it is under 40 seconds and is at the 44.1 sample rate.

You have to be running 4.1.1 I think. What version are you using? You can download an update for free at apple.com - http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates/garageband411.html
