Hi,

Does anyone know of any software that can convert a PAL DVD to, say, H.264 but at 24 fps? In other words, I'm trying to undo the 4% speedup. Hopefully you know what I'm talking about, otherwise post back and I'll explain it a bit better :)

Edit: I'm really just wondering about video at this stage. I'm pretty sure that I can sort out the sound.

I understand what your saying and I would of said Handbrake and just set the frame rate from `same as source`to 24fps but after thinking about it all that will do is remove a frame and the video will still play at the same speed. So I dont know of any software that will do what your asking.

What exactly are you trying to accomplish?

Movies on film are 24 fps. In order to transfer them to 25 fps DVD, there are two options. One option is to add a duplicate frame every second, and the other is to speed up the film by 4%.

I have some DVDs with the 4% speedup and basically I'm trying to undo this effect (it's noticeable in Star Wars as all the music is a semitone higher than it should be). It should be simple enough to do but I can't find any software to do it: It should be a matter of encoding the video as usual but instead of flagging the video as 25 fps in the header, it should be flagged as 24. This will make each frame appear for 4% longer and therefore the whole movie will again be the correct length.

Once the video is the right length, I can easily slow down and reduce the pitch of the sound, no problems there. It's just the video that I'm having trouble with.

Yeah, I tried that and it's just removing a frame. I found a post on the Handbrake forums where the developers basically flamed this guy for even asking about it

I've also heard that VLC 1.0 will be able to play from the DVDs directly at 24 fps, so it looks like that will work for playback when the time comes, but it would be nice to be able to get "proper" rips onto my iPod too.

Edit: It looks like Final Cut Pro can do it:

To conform a 25 fps clip to 24 fps in Final Cut Pro:
1 In the Browser, select one or more clips you want to conform from 25 fps to 24 fps.
2 Choose Tools > Conform 25 to 24.
The clips are conformed to 24 fps.

I can access FC Express through work (although I don't know whether Express has this feature) but that's a bit of a pain so does anyone know of anything free?

It's pretty much impossible for the human eye to detect the difference between 24fps and 25fps (unless you superimpose 24fps and 25fps versions of the same piece of footage), it's only ever the audio pitch change that upsets some people.

So instead of dicking around with the video, which currently enjoys a perfect 1:1 relationship with the film frames with no need to mess around with pulldown, why not simply pitch the audio down a semitone without changing its duration? You'll get it back at its original theatrical pitch while still in perfect sync with the 25fps video.
