hey have you guys noticed a significant difference in the ripping speed from MP3 to AAC?? I didn't see this question anywhere, and i was just noticing how much slower it was to rip AAC... i guess better quality means longer rip times...

I dont know how fast ripping in mp3 is, but i ripped a cd to AAC on my PB17 and it was between 8,5 - 10 x
 
Ripping AAC seems to start slower than it finishes. Last CD went from 5X to 11X in a steady progression. I seem to remember a similar thing with MP3, speeds similar, AAC maybe slightly slower.
 
yeah its a newish codec, it needs newer and more powerful processors and more resources to run it.

mp3 is an old codec so it would have run slow on older computers which came out the time of the mp3. But since its an older codec running on a faster computer, it becomes faster too


I'm making a simple point complicated but hopefully you can see it

That will be the same for all ripping from CD. As the laser reads from the middle out. It has to do more processor cycles to read the mass of data in the small middle, than the same date ove the wide edge.

I start with ripping speeds of about 11x then goes up to about 21x at the end (1.3GHz G4 Tower)

1.3 Ghz G4? Hmm. Did you overclock a 1.25? Or are you just rounding up? So if I have a dual 1.25, then it's really a 2.6 Ghz G4! Love it! :D

Back to the topic - I ripped AACs from around 11x then it goes to about 19x. (933 Mhz G4). Mp3s used to rip from 14x to 18x.
 
Well, if you consider the amount that the file size goes down without the quality being reduced it would have to do a little extra work.

Faster computers and newer software will provide faster/more reliable conversions.
 
I've noticed maybe a tiny difference.
My rought estimations are:

192kbps MP3 4x speed.
128kbps AAC 3-3.5x
160kbps AAC 2-3x

My hardware is an aging (but loved!) iMac Indigo 500Mhz G3 Slot loader, with 256mb of RAM, 24x CDRW and an upgraded HD (Seagate Barracuda IV 7200rpm)

I believe AAC is variable bit rate? (could someone confirm that?) Therefor more complicated tunes will take more time than simpler ones.
