Ripping all my CDs

I’m thinking about ripping all my cd music collection to my iTunes app on my mbpr and get rid of all the CDs to declutter, but not sure about the ripping format? They say the “lossless” setting would be the most desirable. I understand it will take up a lot of room then. I alao understand all the music currently purchased digitally on Apple store are not in lossless quality.

IMHO, storage space is very cheap. Once you rip and get rid of your CD's your original lossless data is gone forever. I ripped all of my CD's in lossless format and stored on a 4TB external drive for about $100. Just a thought.

That’s a good idea about external storage. I also noticed I had many copied CDs that I made many years ago and now I can NOT rip those to my iTunes? Is there anyway to rip those old CDs to my iTunes ?

A friend of mine is an audiophile and it drives him nuts that I just rip with the default settings. I'm not an audiophile and the quality is fine for me.

i would not use iTunes but if you must; consider it only plays a few selected music video formats.

backup your music:
consider a 2 or 3 level backup strategy. First store it online or on a home NAS box but also maintain a local copy or two. Have two external hard drives and every so often copy the music on to these and put them into the drawer and or off site location.

a good time to consider a home network storage unit:
i saw QNap had a started 3 bay NAS box that rumored to do some form of raid05. 6TByrte drives are not expensive, well even 10T are not expensive. I dont represent these people tho I just recently bought their product. Drobo and Synology also make home NAS storage products.

difficult to re purpose the old CD/DVD media:
we moved & down sized the household. No one wanted our (10) boxes of this junk. I wound up handling each CD; ripping out the paper and plastic into the re cycle and the actual CD media into the trash.
