Ripping DVDs

Due to my issues with Handbrake converted files not playing on ATV1 (see previous post) I am now using iflicks (which my I add is fantastic!) However, my process is now this -

  • RipIt (rips the DVDs quickly to dvdmedia - time 1hr)
  • Handbrake (Converts movies to m4v - time 1hr)
  • iFlicks (Gets metadata and also enables the movies to play on ATV1 - time 3hrs)

As you can see this is quite a long process and involves a lot of clicking, dragging and deleting files. Does anyone have any easier solutions?

If you're converting the file with Handbrake, iFlicks shouldn't be a three hour process. It sounds like you're having iFlicks convert the file as well.
 
Using a $50 external USB DVD drive will drop the RipIt rip to 7-30 minuted depending on the DVD. Many Macs internal DVD drives have RipLock that slows ripping down to about 2x realtime aka about an hour to rip.

Ripping via external drive also saves the working life of your internal DVD drive.

Sometimes Handbrake doesn't code the film properly straight from the DVD (for me at least), and I think it's great to be able to code several films at once without having to switch DVDs between every film by putting all the DVD rips in the queue.
 
I use RipIt, which usually takes about 20 minutes from an external DVD drive, followed by iVI Pro. This does all of the encoding and metadata acquisition in a single step, and usually takes about 30-40 minutes on a quad i5. It lets you choose whether to target an ATV1 or ATV2 (or other options). 8 quid well spent, in my opinion.

I've never used iFlicks, but I have iVI which does the same thing. I still use Handbrake, because of the settings. I just can't seem to get the same quality to size-ratio with iVI as with Handbrake. How is iFlicks in terms of settings? Is it more like iVI or Handbrake?
 
Dunno about iFlicks, but you do know that iVi uses handbrake for encoding ?

Edit: just checked iFlicks uses quicktime to encode. iVi uses HandBrakeCLI which can be found if you show package > contents > resources.

I am curious what dvd's you are having trouble with in HandBrake using the Apple > Legacy AppleTV preset not working on your atv 1. I wrote the preset so am curious what trouble your having. A pastebinned HandBrake log from a non compatible encode linked here would be immensely helpful.

Yes, but in Handbrake you have more freedom in terms of settings, which allows me to get better quality to size-ratio than I've been able to get in iVi. I only use iVi for recoding of files with low quality.

DVD Fab does it all!

Rip, clone, extract copy, even blu-ray and 3D to any format!

It's on MS platform though...:rolleyes:

So that info isn't very helpful...:(

And for the next couple of weeks, that are offering 40% off the lifetime "full package", Normally $300, with the discount it is $179.40.

Needless to say, still very expensive, but it may be worth it some some for an all in one dvd & bluray copying/ripping solution on the mac, and who want a lifetime vs a year to year purchase of this program.

I have used the PC version of the free dvd decrypter program, and it has worked great for me. I am really looking forward to using this on the mac.

Not sure about ATV1 but my process is simpler

Handbrake to go straight to m4v
MetaX to add the tags

Either way it sounds like you are due for an computer upgrade.
My rips and conversions and tag adding total less than an hour

Than you are using the wrong settings for Hanbrake.

Also, you can queue up encodes just fine with Hanbrake. I've had a deep enough queue that it ran for a week non-stop.

Maybe, but considering how many times I've tried ripping these specific DVDs with Handbrake - there must be some very hidden setting that I'm missing ;) Handbrake encodes these films just fine when I rip them to the hard drive first and then encode the DVD copy.

Also, you can queue up encodes just fine with Hanbrake. I've had a deep enough queue that it ran for a week non-stop.

I know the queue in Handbrake works just fine. That's why I said I use it. My argument was I'm not using Handbrake to do everything since I like being able to put the rips in the queue and let it do its thing, instead of having to change the DVD after every movie like you have to do if you let Handbrake do everything.
