Has anyone else noticed a ripping or tearing sound when turning the case handle or pulling the case off the 7,1 Mac Pro?

I noticed it the first time I opened it, and then again recently. I inspected the inside of the removable enclosure and it looks like the material on the inside of the case where the handle that spins might be damaged? Not sure if it’s normal or not.

I took another closer up shot. It looks like if I push gently on that circle of foam it makes the sound I’m hearing. Almost like tape. I’m guessing that material is some sort of foam covered with a tape like material. I wonder if anyone else’s looks like this or if it’s a perfect circle?

That is NOT normal and yours is damaged. You need to get that replaced.

I figured! That makes me sad! I wonder what the odds are of me convincing Apple over chat/phone to send a replacement enclosure. Bringing this thing into an apple store or packing it up to be returned sounds like a PITA!

Yeah, you definitely found the source of the noise. Certainly they'll offer to send you a new cover.

I just tried online chat with support, and they of course just want me to bring it to a store. Frustrating.

Unfortunately predictable, but perhaps this will get back to the production line and potentially save someone from this annoyance later.

My MP7,1's housing was very difficult to remove the first few times , but got easier after awhile . Temperature of everything was normal , too . 68 degrees F . Some people had problems with Macs still cold from outside temps and brought into a warm building , when first delivered .

But the fit and finish of these early machines is definitely not up to Apple's usual high standards . They seemed to be rushed to market . Mine was made in the USA .

For instance , the logic board screws of my Mac were badly out of alignment with the mounting holes . It just looks shoddy compared to the rest of the Mac . And there were large cosmetic scratches on my I/O Card . Somehow they got past Apple's QA . Might seem trivial , but this is one expensive product and we'd like perfection .

I wonder if there is better quality control in the Chinese plants vs the Austin plant...

I think they were simply rushing things for political and tax reasons . Apple got tariff waivers from the US government at the last moment and they rushed some production from mainland China to Austin , TX . The US factory wasn't quite ready yet . It will be , in time .

Perusing through old watched threads, and I realized I never followed up on this post. I did end up taking it to the Apple store (using a mini dolly cart ? ), and they replaced the removable part of the enclosure. Sure enough, that circle of foam on the inside was in much better shape than my original one was.

Glad it got fixed.

The case unlock mechanism isn't as smooth as what we all thought. There is always some scratchy noise when turning. There are no ball bearings. In the unveil and website, we all thought it was smooth like unlocking a high end safe door or nuclear enclosure seen in movies. It's still very cool though.
