iPod Ripping videos for both iPod and HD-TV?

It seems that the HD-content in ITMS is provided so that when the user buys HD-content, he gets the HD-version of the video that is used when the content is played back through AppleTV, but the user also gets an SD-version that is used when the user wants to sync that video to an iPod.

Is it possible to have something similar with self-made DVD-rips? Of course I could just rip the content twice, once for HD and once for SD, but wouldn't it be listed twice in iTunes, thus making things complicated and confusing?

I dislike the idea that I rip my DVD's in a resolution that works with my iPod touch, but then I would have to use that same low resolution when I watch that content on my FullHD-screen....

You can just rip it twice, one ipod version, and one full resolution version.

Not sure how to organize that on your library however, but i'm pretty sure you can tag the HD versions with HD.

Yes this is possible.

You got 3 choices (app wise):
1. mp4tags from mp4v2, you need to compile it yourself and it's a command line tool (http://code.google.com/p/mp4v2/)
2. Subler, a more general MP4 tool (http://code.google.com/p/subler/)
3. Tagger, a little Tagging App (http://rouvenwessling.de/Tagger/download/Tagger-0.3.dmg)

All are based on the mp4v2 library. All these Tools are pretty new so bugs are expected and you should backup your files before trying to use them.

If you just want the HD logo add the HD tag, for Tagger and Subbler it's a Checkbox, for mp4tags the option would be -H 1

If you want to combine Sd and HD version of a video you need to set two more Tags:
* An Identical cnID for both videos that's unique in your library (just make one up, I usually use the one from the iTunes Store if it's available else I count up)
* The Media Kind needs to be either TV Show, Music Video or Movie (in Subler Short Film) for both files.

Then just add them both at the same time to your library and your done.

I used this myself for a few videos and it usually works like a charm.
