Ripping

I have a collection of Disney DVDs for my daughter, the problem is she keeps breaking them and it is costing me a small fortune to replace them. I decided to rip them to my Mac so that I can make legitimate back-up copies. My problem is that no matter what software I try, none of the dvds will rip without errors. I have tried Mac the ripper, Dvd Fast Copy and Handbrake all with no luck. I have tried the main movie only option and also the complete disc and nothing works. I do sometimes get a video_ts folder but toast or popcorn doesn't recognise it and VLC or Mplayer OSX wont open it. Please someone give me a solution or some advice on how I can make this work, its frustrating the hell out of me

I have never found a DVD that MacTheRipper couldn't handle. Not to insult you, but are you sure you are using it properly?

EDIT: How is your DVD drive at playing movies from the disk? Ever get skips or anything.

I'm surprised Handbrake isn't working for you. Handbrake doesn't create Video_TS folders, instead it actually creates movie or mp4 files. You can open these in Quicktime or VLC as far as I'm aware.

What machine and what model superdrive are you trying this with? For example, the UJ-825 in certain powerbooks does not work with the programs you've mentioned.

I have succsessfully used MacTheRipper on various disks for the past year or so, so I guess I'm using it correctly. The problem only seems to occur with newer Disney dvds like Cinderella, Aladdin and Bambi. I'm using the latest version of MacTheRipper on a G4 1.5 17"powerbook with superdrive, 80gb harddrive and 1.25gb ram. The original dvds play fine, with no skips etc. In response to MikeGA Handbrake won't recognise the aforementioned dvds. Could this be some form of new encryption?

Hmm, well as long as you don't have a matshita uj-825 or higher and you're not trying to rip a different region code, then maybe you've got the intentionally bad sectors problem. DVD players see them and skip them but rippers try to read them. I suggest you try the forums at ripdifferent.com - someone there mentioned a CVS version of handbrake that helps.

Make sure your discs are very, very, very clean. I've had this bad sector problem before and good cleansing with 70% ethanol cleaned it up right away. If there's a youngster scratching/goobering up DVDs, there's a good bet that they're not the cleanest. Give one a good go over and see if that clears it up.
