At the moment my mac pro has 3GB

2 x 512mb in riser A Dimm 1 & 2
2 x 1GB in riser B Dimm 1 & 2

I'm buying a further 2GB taking me to 5GB but what advice could anyone offer about riser position for the new memory ?

Thanks.

Assuming you're getting another 2*1gb pair, put the new pair into slots 1&2 on riser A and move the 512Mb dimms to slots 3&4 on riser A.

The RAM in slots 1&2 on both risers will perform slightly better than the RAM in 3&4. The DIMMS in 1&2 effectively forward the requests to 3&4 delaying it slightly, so you want the most dense ram in slots 1&2

no problem. let us know how it goes when you get the ram. Is there gonna be much difference in speed going from 3GB to 5GB?

I have 4x1GB coming to me in the mail as well, can't decide if I'm gonna keep my existing 2gb for a total of 6gb, or just use the 4gb and sell the 2gb on. Will probably depend on the speed increase I see when they get installed.

^no bother Slicebread.

Well 3GB nearly always does me to be honest but... I was working on a A0 300dpi massive poster in photoshop and illustrator a couple of days ago and noticed in activity monitor my page outs were quite high (normally they are either 0 or very low) so I have conviced myself it's time to buy more ram.

So I'm not sure about 'speed enhancement' all the time, but it's more for my piece of mind that my mac is working more efficently and with me - rather than against me :)
