Rising dollar = less cost?

Hey there,

I'm an apple user from Canada. Currently, the price for apple gear up here is a fixed price that falls around the convertion rate.

For example, the 599/799 Mac Mini in the states is 699/949 here.

Lately, though, the canadian dollar is exploding, and will soon match the American dollar 1:1. Analysts predict this will not be a short-term thing and will stay constant for a while.

The question is, will we see a reduction in prices from Apple Canada that reflect the new dollar value?
 
I'd imagine so. But it probably won't make an impact for a little while, and I could imagine prices to not change very much. But it does depend on how long the currencies stay at the 1:1 ratio.
 
Apple is usually quite slow to readjust prices because
1) it may go the other direction just as suddenly
2) they don't want to have to keep readjusting web and reseller pricelists, and they surely don't want all the hassle of providing price protection to all the resellers and customers who bought within x number of days
3) Apple doesn't want prices like $816.50 or $838.25. They want nice round sellable prices like $799 or $849. So they round down on some and round up on some.
 
I don't know if Macs will ever be as the same price in Canada as they are in the US (at least no any time soon).

These are all guesses, I have no idea if they are true.

1. Shipping is different. Apple sells many more Macs to the US than to Canada so they may be better prices when shipping to the US.

2. Apple has more warehouses in the US, this too may reduce shipping charges.

3. There are many more Apple stores in the US. More stores hopefully equals more sales. More sales equals lower prices.


Again, I really don't know if any of these are true. My point is there there are probably more factors than just the dollar conversion that add up to the difference in price.
 
Also, although obviously this is much less true for Canada and the US because of proximity and familiarity, I think the price Apple sets has more to do with the particular market than it does to price equivilency to the US.

Just as likely, as the US dollar crumbles, prices in the US will rise.

Well, if our Canadian dollar matches the American, I'm probably going to get my mac from the states, if Apple in Canada isn't willing to change their rates.

Great post, and being a fellow Canadian I feel where your coming from. However I don't see them changing the prices anytime soon and like everyone has said it's not just the conversion thats the problem.

My suggestion, is to find somone with an American p.o box and then pick it up from them. I know thats what Im doing once the intel ibook comes out.

With the US $ being weak in comparison to most other curencies this is a very univeral discussion, the truth is that its not just the curency, the south african rand has also being doing very well, but the tech industry hasnt really reacted yet. Still like in NZ, convert it, ad 12.5% and add a grand! :p :D :D :D
 
I too am tempted to buy American, but then again I could buy a 2GB nano from my friend that now lives in Pakistan..... there you can get them for an equivalent of $80 Canadian.
