I am in urgent need of assistance here.

A few days ago my mac was working fine. Then images stopped loading on some websites like wikipedia. Then this morning I open up the laptop and every application starts freezing as if there was not enough ram. I have 16Gbs of ram. I checked activity monitor and it showed that applications were taking up more ram than they normally should for no apparent reason. System functions such as force quit, sys. prefs., and even about my mac freeze after finally popping up 10 min later. Even basic functions such as changing the volume and brightness are delayed by 2 minutes from when I push the corresponding button. I run 10.8.3 with 2.7 GHz i7 and 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM all on a 750GB SSD. I was barley able to write this post. Help.

Has your computer been running without shutting down for a long time? Maybe all you need is fresh reboot.

What things are actually using a lot of ram when you look at activity monitor? You could just try and quit/reopen those.

Try running a hardware test. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509

You could try reinstalling OSX.

Maybe something is faulty with your computer/ram?

I have had to force shut down multiple times. Things that are taking up ram include kernel and loginwindow. These are core processes and I dont think you can force quit them. And I think I may have to do a reinstall, but if I do it though recovery, do I have to erase the disk or does it move the files automatically?

You're in Philly.

You have a laptop.

I humbly suggest you visit a genius at one of the local stores.

This is, after all, why they're there.
