I am a new mac user have had my mac for about a week, I am running mavericks and everything is going smooth.

after taking apart the macbook cleaning out the internals and adding new thermal paste (MX-4) everything is running cool too, After hearing all the problems with 10.10 i am hesitant to upgrade :) i love the look of Yosemite and am tempted to update but i don't want a whole host of problems as i am new to mac, battery life on mavericks is about 6-7 hours as well.

could anyone with the same model/year chime in?

What most people have trouble with is the "Upgrade" path especially with "older hackie programs"! However don't fret over the upgrade if you use the free program (that many Mac techs use) called EtreCheck. It will print out a report showing you if programs, services, old plugins & kexts and ship you the path to delete/upgrade them manually, them reboot.
