I'll preface this by saying in the few days my wife has had her AirPods, they've fallen out a couple times (one time we had to use a "High Pitched Beeping for 20 Mins" video from YouTube to find them). She never seemed to have this issue with her EarPods though.

So a day ago my lovely wife was roasting some brussel sprouts for dinner (yum!), when I heard her scream from the other room, I ran in to see what happened. While she was bending down towards the oven to take the sprouts out, without warning one of her AirPods had popped out, landed in the bottom of the oven, bounced once through a hole, and found it's final resting place underneath the bottom plate of the oven (in the place where the flame is firing). We turned off the oven immediately, I ran and got some tools, but it was too far out of reach. The final nail in the coffin was when I heard a faint pop, then smoke rising from the oven (probably from the battery). :(

I waited for the oven to cool a bit, and had to partly dismantle my oven to reach the dead AirPod (pictured below). It mostly stayed in one piece, but is very roasted, a light golden brown, the color of a perfectly roasted marshmallow. :D

After chatting with Apple Support, their only suggestion was to see if we can get a replacement under my homeowners insurance or credit card, since we don't have AppleCare+. They didn't know that a single AirPod replacement is available at this link: https://support.apple.com/iphone/repair/service/pricing So we will be exploring our replacement options. I was hoping some Apple engineers might want to examine an AirPod that went through a 400 degree roasting, and swap me for a free replacement. ;)

So just a PSA, use caution when wearing AirPods around a stove and flames. :)

tl;dr: Lovely wife dropped an AirPod in the oven where it was unreachable without taking the oven apart. It got roasted. Apple Support won't replace it since it doesn't have AppleCare+.

This is why I'm not sold on the airpods idea, too many potential problems and not enough strong positives for me. I'll keep my bose bluetooth for now, thanks.

What's wrong with them??? Lol.

If they smell like brussel sprouts now, that'd be a deal breaker for me. Sorry for your loss.

ouch very sorry to hear that. I really hope the next generation Airpods come with a different design that allows for ear tips to keep them securely in ear. This is the reason why I had to return mine, I would shove them in but 3 minutes later they would start coming loose.

Once the supply satisfies demand, there will be endless variations on how AirPods met their demise.

I also predict that the unlucky owners will immediately replace them, because they will have grown to love them too much. I know I would.

My question:

Did brussel sprouts taste OK, with their unintended seasoning of lithium battery fumes...? :)

Here(-ish)
I suspect we will be hearing or seeing of many episodes in this fashion.
I'll stick with my H5's...
The VAST majority of reviewers and early adopters have said they cannot get their AirPods to fall out. There will, of course, be exceptions, and this is the go to place for Apple complaints.

Glad to hear you like your B&Os though. I always hope they're worth it.

The funny thing is when I tried the AirPods, I couldn't get them to fall out at all. I guess some ears just aren't made for AirPods.

Why the heck was your wifey wearing the AirPods near a hot oven? She has no one to blame but herself. Lesson learned....the expensive way.

They rock. Best BT I have found yet for under $300.

True, I think because they are so light and comfortable she just really didn't realize they were in her ears.

I've definitely worn mine while cooking... without issue (mine have never fallen out of my ears).

Just goes to show you that some ears weren't made for AirPods. Bummer.
