I just downloaded the updated RockYourPhone 2.0. I originally had to install 2.0 because I wanted to use the applications "tlert" and "mywi". What I'm seeing now is that RYP 2.0 is billing itself as a better, faster Cydia.

I'm sure I'll have more questions later, but what do you guys think of this? Seems to me that more memory will be used unless I decide to completely abandon Cydia (which I don't plan on doing). There is complete duplication across the two app managers, for example RYP saying you can uninstall mobile substrate and just manage the extensions from within RYP.

The more I look through it, the more confused I get. I think I need some sleep and then attack this again in the morning...this update is not what I expected.

Looking forward to others' thoughts on this...

Never heard of it and I don't need two of the same things. I don't even have Icy installed because it is just the same as Cydia.

Competition is good. Cydia wasn't mentioned in one of the 10 commandments.

If you're that tight on memory, you need a new phone. People have lots of duplicated applications. What's the big deal? If it bothers you that much, uninstall mobile substrate.

What's to be confused about and what needs 'attacked'? If you want to use the applications RYP sells, install their software. Simple. Jeez, the things people get confused and obsessed about is amazing.

I am just curious about a new contender when Saurik has poured so much time into supporting us.

I will continue to just use Cydia until there is a compelling reason to try another. If I were on a 2G or 3G I would consider Icy or RYP because Cydia is sloooooooooooowwwwww on those phones (I had forgotten the Cydia lag until I fooled around on an old 2G I have), but on my GS its a tolerable lag.

So is Rock Your Phone a desktop app? I just looked at their website and I'm a bit confused...

Also, how does it replace MobileSubstrate?

I believe if you use their desktop client to install apps, you don't have to have Rock installed on your actual phone.

yup :( this sucks. i didnt want RYP app. so in order to uninstall, you have to restore.

If you uninstall those/that app(s) can you get rid of RYP.

FWIW, I was just installing SBSettings on my 2G before upgrading to 3.1, so I could enable the numerical battery but still keep it on 3.1 and I tried Icy. It was noticeably faster than Cydia on the 2G. So I think I'll use one of the alternatives on the older hardware but keep Cydia on the GS.
