Rocket Raid 2314 = Kernel Panic City

I have been using a High Point RocketRaid 2314 card in my Nehalem Mac Pro for the last year with no issues.

Recently I've been getting Kernel panics on several esata devices such as a Graid Gtech 1TB drive via esata and a Sonnet R400P chassis in Raid 5..

I've seen that many paople have isssues with esata cards and 10.6.2...

Does anyone out there with this card have any solutions... This is ruining my life...

I presume you're running 10.6.2, but would you confirm the actual version of OS X you're running?

I ask, as 10.6.2 had problems with RAID and eSATA cards. So does some system firmware, but as you were fine (presume all the hardware was attached during that time), that wouldn't be the case.

Assuming it is 10.6.2, you'd want to upgrade it. If not, more information will be needed to help.

BTW, if you're using the RR2314 for RAID 5 (any form of parity array), it's not a good idea.
  1. The RR2314, or pretty much any of Highpoints products are junk, and the support dept. is horrible (don't know what they're doing).
  2. It's a Fake RAID controller = SATA controller chip + driver support to handle the RAID functions. This is fine for 0/1/10/JBOD, but not RAID 5, as it cannot handle the write hole issue associated with parity based arrays (5/6 or nested parity 50/60). A UPS will help, but it can't solve the problem entirely. You need a proper RAID card for that, and a good UPS as a bare minimum. Seriously, your data is in peril (matter of when, not if).

You can take a look at the RAID wiki, and pay particular attention to level 5 (covers what a write hole is).

Yes I am running 10.6.4

Nano - very interesting about RAID 5 not being good with RR2314.. I've run a sonnet chassis in Raid 5 for a year and never had an issue.. These kernel panics are a recent development... I will try to cause a kernel panic and post the log as soon as possible..

It's the same with any Fake RAID controller = nothing but a SATA controller card + drivers (RAID support is included in the drivers).

But when you also consider the horrible Customer Support from Highpoint, their products aren't all that attractive (except under specific circumstances and the user knows what they're doing in the event of a failure = handle it themselves).

I just tried reinitializing the disk through Softraid and again a kernel panic..
Through my RR2314 card to a sonnet R400p chassis via esata...

I'm thinking OS X is either corrupt (I presume you've already tried repairing permissions,...), or there's software that's installed that's causing it (recent install; KP's didn't start until you installed whatever it was). Mac Drive would be such a program, as users have reported problems like this.

You'd want to do a fresh install of OS X, and test. Then install applications one by one, testing between each one (will let you know which one is the culprit).

It's a pain, but it's the right way to proceed (failure tells you the offending software; a shotgun approach won't = reinstall everything all at once).

I just cleaned out my entire system with Onyx and now the problem appears to have gone away. I successfully built a RAID 1/0 and I'm transferring massive amounts of data back and forth with no error whatsoever. I ran out and bought a Sonnet Tempo E4P card as a possible solution since the Highpoint cards are crap (as you say). I've yet to put that card in since my system is buried in a massive rackmount enclosure and reformatting the System drive is much less painful.

In onyx I cleaned out the Kernel and boot cache amongst other things..

Could this have magically solved it or am I still a ticking time bomb? I am stress testing the bejesus out of it right now... Should I throw in the Sonnet card anyway? I need 4 esata ports no matter what for my work...

Highpoint's major issue, is that they don't manufacture anything. All their products are developed by ODM's, so the product quality is inconsistent. It's also why the support staff don't know what they're doing (why the support sucks).

As per any eSATA card, it's not good for RAID 5 (if you're running a software implementation, you will get burnt; it's a matter of when, not if). Even if running a UPS (the UPS helps <power outages are a significant cause for write hole poblems>, but still can't solve the problem entirely).

The RR2314 would be fine with 0/1/10 (use Disk Utility). There's no parity involved with these levels, so the write hole issue doesn't exist. Now assuming you take this advice, the Sonnet can go back. BTW, the information also applies to the Sonnet if you decide to keep it. So they're not that much different in terms of hardware. Sonnet however, is a better company in terms of support (actually offer drivers they promise that I've seen, and it's my understanding the people on the other end of the phone/email are going to tell you to go "somewhere", which has happened with Highpoint).

So I'd recommend setting up a different level, or going with a hardware solution (that's going to cost some cash, as you'll need a different card, enclosure, and enterprise grade HDD's).

I didn't know about Onyx, which is why I fugured on a complete reinstall as described earlier (does the same thing, and can potentially fix other problems). It also would have indicated which application was the problem, assuming that was the source.

BTW, has the system been shut-down improperly?
That can cause problems overall, and when it causes a problem with RAID, it's usually significant (reinstall is usually required, as it has better odds of working vs. a software clean-up tool in my experience in cases of the "unknown software problem").

I am running an SSD in the 2nd Optical bay so is there any special way to reformat it to assure integrity and conditioning?

Should I throw in the Sonnet Card while I'm going all in?

I see my weekend slipping away from me.. ;)
 
I've not had any weird crashes or shutdowns other than the ones associated with using the esata ports. The weird thing is the original RAID 5 chassis that I created 2 years ago is the only thing that does not crash via esata...

I'm going to reinstall everything and start over... Just debating where its worth putting in the Sonnet Card and pulling the RR2314. I'm leaning toward yes.

I dont' know what drive you have, but the simple way to go is do a single pass secure erase (1 pass of zeroing the drive out).

Might as well. As I said, Highpoint's stuff is pretty much junk (inconsistent, and there's been complaints on this particular card in the past).

I'd say go for it, but keep in mind, you'd have to backup the RAID 5 first, then re-create the array under the Sonnet (card's tend not do things the same way, so you're going to have to re-initialize the drives on the new card = wipes out your data).

If you don't have the ability to do this, you need to find a way to borrow something temporarily if at all possible. If not, wait until you can make the backup (assuming you don't have all the data on the primary drive/s to begin with; if so, you will be fine, but pay attention to your file dates to be sure you don't end up with old stuff).

I've read this old thread and I'm curious what people's opinions are on Hardware RAID solutions.

I've used the RocketRaid cards with Mac Pros for years now, and I've had some problems, not too many, but I read consistently that RocketRaids are junk, HPT has no support (agreed) and there are better solutions.

What are those better solutions? Xserve is no longer an option, and I need to upgrade my RAIDs to 24-50 TB range.

Any thoughts?

ATTO or Areca (not sure of exactly which model, but both make large port count cards; up to 16 ports for ATTO, 24 ports for Areca).

It's a very basic start, as hardware RAID solutions are more complicated than typical SATA controllers (no idea how familiar you are with hardware RAID solutions, so please bear with me).

For example, you will need to be careful about disk selection, as you can't just get a bunch of consumer grade disks (has to do with the recovery timings in the drive's firmware). So check the HDD/Hardware Compatibility Lists for each card, and select disks off of that (saves you aggravation, time, and money due to disks that won't work properly resulting in having to RMA them back to the retailer).

In terms of ports, even 16 may not be enough (raw capacity @ 3TB disks - 48TB). Now assuming you need that much in under say 3 years, then you'll want more ports. And that doesn't even consider a RAID level that offers any redundancy...

As it happens, SAS based cards can run SATA disks. You just have to keep cabling to 1.0 meters or less in order to keep the signals stable.

You can also use SAS Expanders with SAS cards to get more than 24 disks on one card (SAS Expander enclosures do cost more, so if you can, keeping it to 24 disks or less tends to be more cost effective).

General information of course, but more information would be needed to be more specific as to your needs.
