Hey Guys,

Merry Christmas and happy holidays to those over the pond.

One thing I have noticed on my latest 5,1 (I have had 4 in 4 years, different countries)

My PSU fan is a bit random, runs fast on boot (not full speed but fast)
and randomly during various tasks but not when under load.

its a bit of a roller coaster.... any idea why?

Thanks

Phil

Looks nothing wrong about PSU reading, but the PCI fan shows zero is very wrong.

And PCIe cards power draw etc can directly affect the PSU fan behaviour. If there is something wrong in the PCIe compartments, that may be the reason of having unstable PSU fan.

Well spotted on the PCIE fan.

This is actually because I have removed the fan! .................to fit a GPU cooler running push pull on the 120mm radiator.

Could it be that my PSU needs cleaning?

Your PSU temperasures suggested that it’s quite clean, the nothing in the optical bay which may block the airflow as well.

And since you modded the PCIe compartment to run a water cooled GPU. I suggest that’s the root cause.

The PSU fan is somehow related GPU power draw. If your card has occasionally high power draw (not necessary in really high demand workflow. This can happen with just use Safari etc), then it can explain that relatively high PSU fan PRM. 13xx doesn’t looks that bad. For real high GPU loading, it should go higher.

Anyway, if you don’t like that. You can simply use MacFanControl to setup your own PSU fan profile. Makes PSU fan solely base on PSU 2 temperature. Something like min 35, max 55 should works quite well in your case.
